Subject: I-16
Manufacturer: True North Miniatures link
Scale: 1/144
Medium: White Metal
Price (webstore): $6.00 USD

The True North Miniatures I-16 is a one piece casting. The minis I have required minimal trimming and filing although a couple had an area around the right front of the spinner/cowling area that needed to be filled and a couple of the elevators had some rough spots on the trailing edge – nothing worth complaining about or asking for a replacement though. I used a little green stuff and gap-filling super glue to fix the area around the cowling and sanded the rough areas a bit. The control surfaces and canopy frames are outlined with very fine lines. The minis came with decals (various red stars). Not all of the minis had the same type of stars though (some had a yellow edge others did not). I'm working on many other True North minis right now and was able to come up with enough of the yellow-edged stars to give a uniform appearance to one set of planes (type 17s). I used I-94 Enterprises decals on the others. I added Reviresco 1/144 scale pilots to the minis to give them a little more personality.

I modified three of the I-16s a bit to give them the appearance of being I-16 type 17 or 27s. To do this I added cannons (thin brass rod) and bombs (left over from an Armaments in Miniatures kit).

Recommendation: Nice little kit, I recommend it for all experience levels.

Post assembly:
Decals: True North (stars w/yellow edge), I-94 Enterprises (stars with white edges and numbers on the same aircraft), Battlefront Miniatures (slogans), & Microscale for the numbers and emblem on the type 17/27s.
Paint: Vallejo Model Colors
Primer: Rust-Oleum Gray Automotive Primer
Matte Finish: Krylon Crystal Clear Matte

I was working on some I-15s, Pe-2s, and MS.406s but there was a package from Armaments in Miniature waiting for me when I got home from work today so the 1/144 stuff will have to wait a while while I admire Dave's handiwork. So many minis, so little time.

Beautiful work, Kevin! The I-16 has always been a favorite of mine, and you did these minis justice!

If anyone wants me, I'll be weeping quietly in a corner….

Dom, no one likes a weeping banana. Besides, they are four times as big as the 1/600 models. Even if they are superb!

Dom, I apologize for being insensitive. I'll see if I can't come up with something over the weekend that will cheer you up. Kevin

Wow. Amazing!!! So will we see some 109Es or early Fs chasing them around soon?

Great work!

Could you also share with us which Vallejo colors you used?

miscmini Fezian25 Oct 2008 5:18 a.m. PST

gogamecocks, I've the -109s on hand but am not close to starting them (more commies to do first).

Marc33594, the Vallejo Model Color paints on the I-16s are 064 – Pale Blue, 081 Medium Olive, and 089 Military Green. For the Mig-3s the colors are the same except I used 167 German Grey in lieu of the Military Green.

Kimball, if you're still checking the Pe-2s will sport 119 Green Ochre, 082 Olive Green, and 162 Basalt Gray on the upper surfaces.

And Dom, if the weather clears and the humidity drops I'll be able to put the matte finish on those items I alluded to above.

…and now to the basement. Kevin

Did you use an airbrush? If so what are you thining the Vallejo with and what mixture?

Once again very nice work!

miscmini Fezian26 Oct 2008 10:37 a.m. PST

Marc…, I'm painting these minis by hand. The only sprays involved are the primer and the matte finish.

When I paint by hand I have a bit of paint on the palette (plastic blister pack – use & throw in the recycle bin). I also have a couple of drops of distilled water on a different part of the palette. I keep a paper towel and a rinsing jar close by too. Depending on how thick the paint is I'll just pick up a little paint, touch it to the water…if it looks right I'll apply it to the model. If it doesn't look "right" I'll go back to the water or touch it to the paper towel to get it to the "right" consistency. Kevin

Every couple of loads I'll swish the brush around in the rinse water and then wipe the brush on the paper towel.
