I was just reminded of this anniversary by my good wargaming buddy, Jay Stribling. Courtesy of his cousin, here is a poem by G.K. Chesterton in commemoration:

I second the thought on Empires of the Seas. A very readable history with a really interesting slant on what was an incredibly important bit of history.

One of the crucial battles for Western Europe (other notable examples being Marathon 490 BC, Salamis 480 BC, Vienna 1529, Catalaunian Fields 451, Toulouse 721, Tours 732 as well as a number of battles in the Reconquista -Navas de Tolosa 1212 comes to mind.

Funny how Lepanto and the others hardly warrant a mention in the typical Greatest-Battles-of-all-Time-type publications that abound…

however… Isandlwana and The Boyne, on the other hand…

I am on the last chapters of Empires of the Sea (picked up in the library on a whim), and I have to concur with Kyoteblue and Mckinstry that is a very good read of this period and the Spanish-Ottoman conflict for the domination of the Mediteranian.
