Just spotted this info for any who may be interested. I know I am for sure. But the price!! Pretty steep even for a McFarland title. Better be worth it considering the literature on the Crater is sadly lacking. Lets hope this book is the final word on the topic. And a good one at that.

Do we have anything by Schmutz to compair it to? Is the author balanced or do we have another example of mere southern hagiography?

Yikes! $75.00 USD That's quite steep. I might wait until Amazon starts advertising used copies.

Not sure what his credentials are in ACW history. I could not locate anything else from this author myself. After reading the McFarland page release on this title, I believe I am a little sceptical as to what the book is really about. Myself, I am looking for a detailed tactical treatment of the Crater. As to the political backlash created by the Union blunder and Burnside in particular, I can do without. I think its well established that Burnside was not a spectacular general by any means. I think I will wait to see what the verdict is in December, especially at that price.
On another note, I just found out that Eric Wittenberg is going to begin his research on a book treatment concerning Tupelo & Brice's Cross Roads in 1864. This I am most happy about. I have heard that Bearss' book on this is quite good, but I do not own a copy as it is now out of print and hard to find not too mention expensive when located. In any event I look forward to Eric's title when it is finally released. Who better to tackle this battle than the cavalry master himself.
Eric, if you post to this site, a HUGE thank you from me for taking on the subject of BCR.

Cheers, John

$75 USD is more than a little on the rude side. Will wait for the reviews before I even consider spending that much for something I have only an outside interest in.
