Can anybody help me with late 1942 (Solomons) camouflage for HMAS Hobart & HMAS Australia? Thanks!

Im not 100 percent sure but, as far as I can tell, neither sported camouflage during 42. The Australia was painted a very dark gray, either RN MS1 or MS2 while the Hobart was a lighter gray, perhaps RN MS3 or MS4.

Thanks, good picture. Google also found this: picture which gives the name of the colour.

How about the Canberra at Savo Island? Was she painted as the Australia is shown above?

I remember reading somewhere, and seeing a photo indicating, that Canberra was in an overall blue-grey scheme, but don't remember the source. There may be a link somewhere from TMP if you search hard enough.

BTW, According to Squadron/Signal "US Heavy Cruisers in Action", Astoria was also in Measure 11 or 21, with Quincy and Vincennes in Measure 12M (with splotches). The same book claims Chicago was in Measure 14.

(From my perspective, Measures 11 and 21 would basically be painted the same. I'd pick a mediuim blue-grey color which allowed me to see the model's detail in typical lighting, and pick a slightly lighter color for the decks, with the excuse that the deck was more exposed to the sun).

See Snyder and Short link, but remember to lighten colors to account for the small size of the models ("scale color"):

After reading BV's link prior to mine, it looks like it contains comments on both USS Chicago, and Canberra.

Given the amount of time that has elapsed, and the fragmentary nature of the evidence, tieing these colors exactly to particular color chips is probably wishful thinking. I wouldn't assume that just because the Australian ships were built in UK, that they would be using Admiralty paints in 1942; maybe they were using US or localized paint supplies. Again, taking all into account, I'd go with a "scale-color-influenced" medium blue-grey, with deck being slightly lighter. For the Guadalcanal period, I'd go with making Australia, Canberra, Hobart, and Chicago, similar-looking.
