The new AWE combat system is proving very successful and exciting.
It has been invented in the 20th August and takes full advantage of our flexible formation rules (using groups of units/bases of exactly the same type). With this system you can fight using single units or aligned groups of any number of units, in about the same time.
The dice used for CC are the same regardless of the number of bases in the formation, only the number of outcome dice change accordingly to the phalanx's frontage.
The kill number is still simply set by the arithmetic difference of CC dice, as in the older AWr versions.
Our semi-simultaneous turn system (set 3 years ago) is now further refined and allows for greater decision scope without any charts. No markers or bookkeeping throughout.
Tests game summary Roman vs Gauls, 180AP (30-36 units):
Roman Legio: mostly EdH units (Heavy Edge)
Gauls: most LyM(b) (Levy infantry, using mixed weapons, berserk)
The Romans deployed with in a strong line two deep line, except for the extremes. The right was guarded by CvM(r) (Medium cavalry raw) and to the left were a couple BwM and slingers (BwL).
The Gauls deployed also double ranked with light cavalry (CvL) on the right and chariots on the left.
Shoot and then charge had already been seen in small playtest games, but this time the INI favoured the Romans and they released a devastating close-range volley and charged.
To their right the Cv was attacked by the CvL enemy javelins but without consequences.
The Romans shooters feel a little behind for fear of the charging chariots, also slightly to the back of the main line.
CC in the centre showed good spirit of the Barbarians that managed to held the Romans but not without casualties.
The Imperial Bows finally got into range and triggered some action from the ChM.
The CvM(r) was attacked in close-combat by the CvL in double rank but luck has not failed them and the enemy were repulsed. The Roman cavalry was proving better then expected.
Then in the main line the LyM(b) first impetus (luck) failed and the Barbarians were pushed back.
In the Gaul's right the massed CvL started doing some progress but could not effectively manoeuvre because the Romans were anchored in terrain.
The Chariots came closer and many missiles were exchanged with the bows and slings but the attacking force lost steam because of casualties and the Roman left now looked solid.
The barbarian light horse finally got the better of their enemy and started to harass the Roman's flank but it was too late as in the centre the warriors were giving away.
Roman victory by the smallest margin.
During the game we saw many orders spent in redressing ranks and trying to surprise the enemy by throwing missiles before charging, as the INI allowed.
The ‘phalanxes' worked as a whole and likeness to source descriptions seems to have increased.
Very good effect, better historical resemblance without constraining rules: with all promoted, not forced.
