Given the enduring popularity of the ACW, how about a "top five" ACW units?

At first blush

Yanks

The Iron Brigade
Rush's Lancers
Pennsylvania Bucktails
Berdan's Rifles
New York Fire Zouaves
114 Pennsylvania
14th New York
Wilder's Lightening Brigade
1st New Jersey Cavalry
1st Minnesota
54th Maine
20th Maine

Rebs

Stonewall Brigade
1st Virginia Cavalry
Washington Artillery
Louisiana Tigers
1st Texas
Terry's Texas Raiders
Rockbridge Artillery

Irish Marine05 Sep 2008 9:31 a.m. PST

You forgot the Irish Brigade.

Lentulus05 Sep 2008 9:56 a.m. PST

Top in terms of Best Battlefield Performers or Most Popular?

Frankss05 Sep 2008 10:53 a.m. PST

I'm not familiar with ACW but what came to mind cavalry wise was Gen Custer with Michigan Cavalry and I don't know what Jeb Stuarts unit was.

Plynkes05 Sep 2008 11:59 a.m. PST

88th Colored Infantry (formerly 17th Infantry, Corps d'Afrique). Best damn unit at garrisoning Port Hudson, Louisiana.

Pardon me, but I'm biased. Family connection, supposedly.

Wizard Whateley05 Sep 2008 12:44 p.m. PST

It looks like you've got a list of 'most interesting', either history or uniform-wise. What are you looking for?

rddfxx05 Sep 2008 2:47 p.m. PST

Hood's Texas brigade
Steuart's Maryland brigade

doc mcb05 Sep 2008 2:56 p.m. PST

Well, we COULD decide on criteria, first.

Lentulus05 Sep 2008 4:04 p.m. PST

Which of these units do you have painted up with correct uniform and unit flag in your ACW army?

doug redshirt05 Sep 2008 4:37 p.m. PST

"It's them damned black hat fellers again!" The Iron Brigade without a doubt. From Aug 28, 1862 Brawner Farm to Gettysburg, they lost more men then any other Union brigade. Of Lee's five units that suffered the highest losses, four of them suffered it by facing the Iron Brigade.

Brawner Farm, South Mountain, the cornfield at Antietam, McPherson's Woods at Gettysburg.

Rush's Lancers

----Why? They only had lances and….? That's it. That's why they are on the list?!

14th New York

------Don't you mean 14th Brooklyn? The 14th NY was a differnt regiment that did not much. I think you meant the 84 NY or 14th Brooklyn.

1st New Jersey Cavalry

-------Again… why?

54th Maine

---huh? There was no 54 Maine.

Warmage05 Sep 2008 7:00 p.m. PST

How about the Missouri Brigade. Arguably one of the finest Confederate brigades out there.

As for favorite Union regiment, 12th New Hampshire at Chancellorsville. Highest losses of the day, without breaking and all out of a green unit. Sickles remembered them with great fondness in his later years. Oh, and my Great Great Grandfather was in Co. C . . . . so, perhaps, some bias there!

Tommy2005 Sep 2008 8:14 p.m. PST

8th Illinois Cavalry

Cafe Vienna05 Sep 2008 10:00 p.m. PST

Is a brigade a unit? Wouldn't a unit be a single regiment.

Rush's Lancers is a UK thing. We go all batty for the unusual units.

BW195905 Sep 2008 10:34 p.m. PST

The Gibralter Brigade (3rd div, II corps)
4th Ohio
8th Ohio
7th West Virgina
14th Indiana

125th Ohio (routed Hoods Texans)

34th Ohio (mounted Zouaves)

9th Ohio (XIV corp, used Prussian drill)

Captain Insano05 Sep 2008 11:16 p.m. PST

The 128th Light Water-Bottle Repair Unit

sma194106 Sep 2008 5:18 a.m. PST

any U.S. Regular Army regiment…

avidgamer06 Sep 2008 8:28 a.m. PST

"Rush's Lancers is a UK thing. We go all batty for the unusual units."

Okay but… did you know they never used their lances in combat plus the men __DETESTED__ them and they discarded them as quickly as possible?

Major Mike06 Sep 2008 10:55 a.m. PST

Orphan Brigade, wrecked by Bragg at Murfreesboro.

ACWBill09 Sep 2008 7:23 a.m. PST

Fredrick was no doubt referring to the 54th Mass.

Lentulus09 Sep 2008 9:36 a.m. PST

"they never used their lances in combat"

Why should a dull reality be allowed to interefere with the deployment of a colourful unit?
