I'm a member but couldn't quickly see where to vote – so let me say here (1) I'd definitely be interested (2) I'm Sydney based and (3) I frankly dont see the point in a "competition", why not just gather and enjoy re-creating the battles, uniforms, tactics, history, etc. |

I didn't vote as I probably wouldn't go but some thoughts: - A convention with few attendees is best done as a workshop – use the small attendance as an asset. - Demo games not just guys playing a game e.g. Leuthen refight with a presenter giving a commentary. - High quality terrain and figures – not another green cloth with no terrain. - Traders – books, figures, terrain, paints. - Static displays e.g. still shots from Lace Wars movies and TV docos, boardgames. - Presentations (e.g. 30 minute 35mm slide tour of Fort Ti, Saratoga, Mohawk Valley during coffee after dinner.) - Food, parking, beer. In Australia, distance will be the problem, the only way I could get my stuff to Sydney or Goulburn from Victoria would be by car. So a 2-day drive for a 2-day weekend in Sydney isn't going to be attractive. But use the small numbers to advantage. But I think the tyranny of distance would be too great a hurdle. Perhaps drum up interest by starting an Aussie "Grand Siecle" Yahoo group. |

The Hawk, some nice ideas, our club GWC is always doing smaller cons that are period specific, A qaulity stipulation will be on the terrain, as there is nothing worse than sparse barren tabletops, as for static displays we will invite the few 18the cent collectors and re-enactors that are out there. I like the idea of the slide tours, now all we need is someone to do the shots for us! We have in the past had lecturers from Canberra ANU for lectures so perhaps if there is enough interest we could engage them again. Yes, distance is our biggest challenge, not everyone likes to travel more than two hours by car for a event, but a weekend with the boys, what a treat! Airfares can be cheap if bought in advance though, so a little planning will go a long way. As for a yahoo group, waste of time IMO, when php discussion groups have a lot more flexability, and ability to show off pics and the ability to follow discussions better,(like the Rum Corps, the only major historical australian discussion group that I am aware of) Thanks again cheers Matt |

Matt, With enough notice, if you pick a major action from a particular period you could organise a large scale game with multiple generals and have specifically designed terrain. For example, say you get enough interest in a refight of Ramilles 12 months from now – that gives the parties time to buy, paint say a brigade worth each and contribute towards buildings and terrain – or some do the terrain and some the figures etc. I reckon it comes down to 'Why do we go to conventions?' and 'What is a convention anyway?' Quality and spectacle is the key for games which people want to see or participate in. You know my position on these things – big games are for the stayers and are worthwhile so long as any public attendance is assited through hand-outs and a guide for the game. Participation games should be small, gorgeous to look at, fun and easy to play with a quick result – less than an hour even. |

Well it never was completely finished but if you need it then I can work on it. I've got 8 fortress guns and two mortars for any lace wars period but only Malburnian crew so depending what you need, they'll need additional crew. |
