Sumerian Chariots in 6mm

Remember back in 2005, when I promised pictures of those Sumerian chariot stands in 6mm?

My third Warmaster Ancients batrep for my new blog. Full of surprising twists and an exciting surprise ending a la M. Night Shyamalan!

I'm interested in your battle, so I'll read through your post, but I do have a tip: white text on a black background is very hard to read.

Are the figures 10mm Old Glory?

Thanks. Very cool! I love the Romans!

Scomac-

Hmm…I have had no other complaints on the colors. Should I try red on green? :) The figs are almost all OG. There may be a few Magister Militum on the Roman side.

Thanks, Mike! Although I love the Gauls myself!

You could try "black on orange" as a background? grin

I remember reading somewhere that that was actually a good color combination for people to read but I don't know where I read that. That was for paper, not sure it applies to the screen.

Regarding the white on black:
It could be the letters are not "white" enough. They show up as a dull grey. That and the font is one of those "skinny" kinds so the letters are a bit closer together so I recommend Times New ROMAN. evil grin

Seriously, I think the standard is to use a lighter background than the print, hence the "black on white", "black on light blue", etc.

Now with easier-on-the-eyes font!

I dunno why I laughed so much at the picture of the cat.. but I did… funny :)

Nice report, Trotsky, and a very cinematic battle! The excitement's almost enough to make me dig the old WMA rulebook off the shelf… if only I had enough painted units to get an army together, instead of 3 or 4 units each from about 7 or 8 different armies. D'oh!

I also see from previous posts on your blog that you're doing an Achaemenid army next, and the Consul's onto Indians. Are you going with more OG figs, or have you decided to make the jump to something with less lead content? I've got a sampling of some of the different OG Grand Scale lines; I thought the Gauls were fantastic, but many of the others are… mediocre, to say the least. The Republican Romans (both Polybian and Caesarian) are possibly some of the ugliest figs I've ever had the misfortune to witness -- I think there's a unit of Principes squirreled away in a drawer somewhere, since I can't bear to look at their 'telephone pole' legs!

Keep up the good work ;)

Hi Mr. Suvurov-

I secured a ton of OG Persians in 10mm at Historicon. They look almost/just about as good as MM and are way cheaper with the OG army discount. In fact, the OG army discount makes most 1000 point armies less than $100 USD US. MM costs nearly twice as much.

Sorry for the fan-boi talk but it's true, and doubly so if you live in the US with our weak dollar. I did get a bag of MM Persian command and a few of the alleged "spara" bags to check them out. Also a unit of elephants and scythed chariots, being unavilable in the OG range. They are nice but not at twice the price, if you get my meaning. Same with the Gauls. I also like the strips as opposed to individual basing…less hassle and a nice "unit" feel, but YMMV.

Also, there are no real Achaemenid spara in 10mm, I'm afraid. The MM guys have round shields and are not sparabara at all, but do make good apple-bearers for the Achaemenid period. I informed OG of this and they said I should suggest 10mm Achaemenids with spara for Old Glory 2.0! :)

It is a bit of a risk going with OG 10mm if you haven't seen the models but I got to see the Persians before buying at Historicon and the Consul got to see his Indians. They were perfectly fine for us.

I'm thinking Sassanids next! :)

Nice report. I right 'perciate the pretty pictures and the vibrant language.

'But Lo' was particularly enjoyable. I'd like to hear the narrator from that old animated Hobbit movie read that report off.

I like the MM stuff where I need one or two specific units since they're sold in unit packs. But for the bulk of an army the OG Army price on 10mm packs can't be beaten!

One army at a time, Trotsky!

I kept falling into the 'next I'll do army x' trap, and now have MM Early Imperial Romans, OG Gauls, Republican Romans and Carthaginians, AIM/Minifigs EIR and Gauls, Pendraken Late Romans, Sassanids and Gauls, as well as Steve Barber Germans, EIR, and Parthians -- all on the go at the same time! (and yes, I do have EIR and Gallic armies from 3 different manufacturers… the grass is always greener, as they say).

But you're right: you can't beat the OG Army prices, while the MM stuff is becoming of increasingly-dubious quality given the constant price increases. Since you live in the US, I'd actually recomment AIM/Minifigs as an alternative to MM for bulking out those OG armies; they haven't got as extensive a range, but the figs are cheaper and prettier, especially the cavalry.

And it's *Prince* Suvorov, if you're going to call me that ;)
