I'm looking for a good general military history of the Crecy campaign. I found these two books on ebay and was wondering what others thought of them. The Road to Crecy: The English Invasion of France by Livingston The Crecy War by Burne As a general history of the HYW I am picking up Sumption's two volume set which I heard was good. What other general histories are worth looking into? Any insight will be appreciated. Regards, Bill |

I have "Crecy War" by Burne. I liked it a lot, highly recommend. It doesn't just cover Crecy campaign, but also the rest of 14th century. |

The Sumption books only cover the first 20 or 25 years of the HYW. |

Livingstone, Burne, and Sumption are all very good. I would also highly recommend The Battle Of Crecy, 1346 edited by Andrew Ayton and Philip Preston. Read the others first if you're just beginning to study this campaign and battle, but once you've "got your feet wet" Ayton and Preston's work is IMO essential for an understanding of the battle and the English army. |

Burne is a little guilty of suffering from English Archery was the machine gun of the Middle Ages syndrome. Otherwise both his books, The Crecy War and The Agincourt War are worth reading as an introduction to the period. Cheers, Darrell. |
