Wow, what an adventure, good luck to them, and thanks for the link Skeptic.

That is great – the spirit of Heyerdahl lives on!

Hi

I wish them luck. One of my favorite sporting events is the Paris-Dakar rally which, in recent years, has had to be either stopped or changed dramatically due to local violence. I hope they are not caught up in that.

The guys on that vessel better be careful once they pass the pirate territory off Somalia. Either that or mount quad 50's.

The route goes through the Red Sea, past Somalia and down the East African cost before rounding the southern tip of Africa around Christmas time.

Aren't they going in the wrong direction?

Neat – thanks for sharing.

Dom, who loved the fatalistic summary at the end of the BBC article….

That's what I was thinking, too, but perhaps they mean to get past one of the worst bits, i.e. the Somali coast, first. It might also be that local winds tend to favour sailing out of the Red Sea, rather than into it.

I think this was the route the original fleet followed. Pharaoh Neco sent them off down the Red Sea, and they returned to civilization by sailing into the Mediterranean via the Pillars of Hercules. It took them three years. They stopped and planted crops every year, and resumed sailing after the harvest. The ships are usually illustrated as galleys, but sailing merchant vessels make more sense – they carry more cargo and have fewer crew to feed.

Now lets see them sail one of those tubs from Sidon to Cornwall.

Yep – just checked; they were told to set sail for the Pillars Of Hercules, but sent south to get there; the Pillars and through the Med was the "home stretch" as it were.

Could it be gamed as a campaign of sorts?
