Robert Duvall defined the Western in Lonesome dove. No one else comes close. |
jizbrand | 31 Jul 2008 5:31 p.m. PST |
I'd pick Scott Glenn over Kevin Costner for his performance in Silverado if nothing else. |
rddfxx | 31 Jul 2008 5:46 p.m. PST |
Awful tight, given the low count of westerns passin' through these days pardner. Tommy Lee Jones Clint Eastwood Robert Duval Thomas Haden Church Kurt Russell |
Saber6 | 31 Jul 2008 6:48 p.m. PST |
Based on the BODY of their work: Eastwood Elliot Selleck Duval |
McKinstry | 31 Jul 2008 7:58 p.m. PST |
Duvall Eastwood Tommy Lee Jones Elliot Selleck I do think Duvall and Eastwood are in a separate group at the top with room to add or delete among the next three. |

Is Lee van Cleef dead? He must be. |

Well, they haven't thrown the dirt on Eli Wallach yet, so add him in the number 5 slot and get rid of Costner. I'd even take James Garner over Costner, body of "work" or not – not a very big fan. Can keep the other 4 without any changes is okay with me. |

I'd put Eastwood at the top. Duvall may have been better in Lonesome Dove than most Eastwood roles but Eastwood tops him in Unforgiven. After him I would put Duvall. Then: Sam Elliot Tommy Lee Jones (if only for three burials, never mind LD) Johnny Depp |

1. Duvall 2. Selleck 3. Costner 4. Elliot 5. Keith Carradine I really don't have any time for Eastwood |
nazrat | 01 Aug 2008 6:55 a.m. PST |
No Randolph Scott, John Wayne, or Jimmy Stewart? They have most of the actors already listed beaten hands down for body of work cred. And Costner is on ANY "best of" list? That's just wrong!! 8)= |

Sorry, ACTIVE actors only. My mistake! |
Judge Bean | 01 Aug 2008 7:09 a.m. PST |
Eastwood Duvall James Arness Elliot Selleck You gotta give props to Matt Dillon the longest runnin' Marshal on television. His western screen time probably beats Eastwood, and definitely beats Selleck. |
Atomic Floozy | 01 Aug 2008 7:55 a.m. PST |
Though not a large body of work in Westerns, yet. Wes Studi's American Indian characters are great & he was an excellent Joe Leaphorn in the PBS series. Duvall Eastwood Selleck Elliot Costner |

Sorry but the best 5 Western stars are dead
Gracias, Glenn |
Judge Bean | 01 Aug 2008 8:49 a.m. PST |
BTW Arness IS still alive. |
Warbeads | 01 Aug 2008 10:57 a.m. PST |
Which is why I left it at that
Gracias, Glenn |

Terrement - Oh really! My 5 and their last westerns: Eastwood – 1992 Duvall – 2006 Arness – 2006 Sam Elliot – 1999 Selleck – 2003 Check'em all out on IMDB |
vojvoda | 03 Aug 2008 5:36 a.m. PST |
Eastwood's movies are fair at best. Outlaw Jossey Wales is perhaps his best but the others (okay Rawhide but most are too young to remember that series) are western pulp at best. For me Robert Duvall, and Sam Elliot define the modern western hero. VR James Mattes |
Grand Duke Natokina | 04 Sep 2008 2:51 p.m. PST |
I am still curious. Johnny Depp? A body of Western work? Natokina. |
Warbeads | 04 Sep 2008 6:19 p.m. PST |
Roger that, Natokina. Maybe link ? |
Warbeads | 05 Sep 2008 1:35 p.m. PST |
Roger that, but I was thinking I had maybe missed some others
Gracias, Glenn |

Morgan Freeman Danny Glover Sidney Poitier Denzel Washington Cuba Gooding Jr. Just kidding
:) Well I'd say ability to play a convincing Western role every time out regardless of outside moviemaking factors, script, etc: Robert Duvall Tommy Lee Jones The rest (yes, Eastwood included) are hit or miss
and for the Western genre, probably a cut below.. |
