Hi I'm building a ECW parlamentarian army force and I want everything to be perfect. I have solved most of the problems that I've come across regarding uniforms and colors but I still have a huge one. As some of you probably knows, many cavalry regimental colors are lost in history leaving no accounts. I'm not sure that this is the case with Cromwell's own regiment but I cant find any pictures of his colors of that regiment on the internet or in any books I've come across so far. I've looked in all the osprey-books for example. However did I found out that the Cromwell museum did get a reproduction of what is supposed to be an ironside guideon/flag a long time ago. Does anyone in this forum knows how it looks or where I can find a picture of it? I cant strole down to the museum because I live in Sweden. If anyone knows something I would be so thankful. |

I have a copy of English Civil War Times by Partizan Press that has colour Cornets for wargame units in various scales, I will check if any are New Model, there is a strong possibility that regiments retained their existing flags when absorbed into the new Model Army so pre 1645 Cornets should suffice. |

I found this link Although the article states it is a replica of Cromwell's cavalry flag, it is clearly a foot colour! |

Oh yes ive seen it, its the wrong one. This is somthing that has its roots from the time of the lord protectorate. The cavalry flag Ive heard rumors about is a smal Guideon. Thanks anyway lads:) |

Which Cromwell museum? The one in Ely or the one in Huntingdon? I could go and have a look for you in the next couple of weeks. Well. Let's be honest here; I could go and have a look for myself and if I find anything while I'm there I can let you know. |

Seen a lot of discussion on this recently on another site. The consensus of a number of learned minds researching some weighty tomes was "nobody knows" I'm afraid! |

Tanks KatieL that would be great:) I think it has been given to Huntington You might be correct there Martin im afraid, but even a fictionaary romantic "reproduction" will do if I can find it. Its like the "sagum" of the republican romans, we do not know for sure wich color was prefered but We often go with classic red:) |

We ambled along to Huntingdon museum and ended up having a chat with the chap there. They have several reproduction flags -- one of which is the above linked flag with the "O.P." label. The other is a rounded guidon. It is black, and has a white device -- a lion (apparently a Cromwell emblem) and the motto "Pax Quaritur Bello" {Peace Sought By War} The sourcing for the design in a book available at prestwidge.com/river/respublica which apparently lists flags present at Cromwell's funeral. I got them to email me a document which contains a diagram of the design; link and also took some photos.. The flag; link Cromwell's coat of arms; link |
