Hi, I happened to come across these rules when I was browsing a webstore. Can anyone tell me about them (volumes 1 and 2)? Thank you. Tony |

I think they are scenario books and not rules. |

They are indeed scenario books, with the focus on fielding units of regiments and batteries. Most scenarios involve a few divisions. The author gives both raw numbers and Johnny Reb III unit strengths, so you can easily use the scenarios for any game which uses the regiment as the basic maneuver unit. |

There are also a couple of scenarios (in both volumes as I recall?) that are very much suitable for skirmish level rules such as "Brother Against Brother", and others!! If you have even a very minor interest in gaming the ACW, Aggie 21, I can highly recommend you purchase both volumes of "Enduring Valor"!!!!! No matter what rules you decide upon as your favorite these two volumes will provide you with many months of games if you just play one scenario a week!! They ARE loaded with exactly the information gamers want for putting together, and running a scenario! And it's all in Full Color, which helps when transferring the maps to the table!! Don't forget the follow on book covering "Antietam", which is a single volume work!! It's just as good, too!! |

I have vol 1 and love it. Retail is a bit pricey but printing is good quality. Holds up well to my constant reading. I do think that the map scale of units and their actual table scale seem to be off. I'll be darned if I can ever get my units to take up as little space as they show on the maps! Still, I give the books a A+. |

It may be because I created the maps to depict the actual ground scale. I use 3/4x3/4 bases for JR3, so my troops fit well in playtesting. I know that folks who use 1x1 bases cannot get their stands in for some some scenarios. Simply expand the ground scale a bit if you need to. Thanks for all the compliments!!! A new Brother Against Brother book in the same style is well in progress. |

Scott, When will the revised Brother Against Brother be available? Do you sell it and the ENDURING VALOR: GETTYSBURG IN MINIATURE #1 and #2? Thanks. Aggie |

Aggie, I only have my personal copies of my scenario books. They can be purchased from Marek/Janci Design (the publisher) or from several retailers (Caliver Books in the UK, as well as Principles of War, but the latter is out of stock). In the US, Warweb carries the books, as well as Battlefield Terrain Concepts (Doug Kline) and other retailers. Volume 1 of Brothers Divided: Scenarios from the Gettysburg Campaign in well in progress. Ivor and I are exchanging e-mails almost daily as this moves forward, clarifying scenarios, adding little extras that will make them even better for the gamemasters and players, and tweaking things for a final time. We hope this will be the finest BAB scenario book in print by the time it comes out later this year. |

Scott, Is Vol 1 of Brothers Divided:Scenarios from the Gettysburg Campaign that is in progress different than Brother against Brother (Revised) and ENDURING VALOR: GETTYSBURG IN MINIATURE Volumes 1 and 2? I am just trying to figure out what to buy and when. Thanks for the help. Aggie |

Aggie
Brother Against Brother is a rule set for ACW skirmish gaming. They were originally written by Ivor Janci (who is now part of Marek/Janci Designs, who are the publishers for Scotts scenarios books below) Enduring Valor: Gettysburg vol 1 & 2 are scenario books for regimental ACW rules. Specifically Johnny Reb III, however, as Scott (author) has mentioned, they can easily be adapted to other regimental rules. Undying Courage: Antietam Campaign is another scenario book, this one covering Antietam. It is aimed again at regimental rule sets (as above, specifically Johnny Reb III – but could be adapted easily to other rule sets). In fact, the scenario Orders of Battle are such that you can use the info provided and probably convert the scenarios to just about any unit scale. Instead of just giving you only the values JR3 rules need, you get the actual info (number of men in the unit, if they are veteran, elite, green or militia, and the weapon they are armed with). Brothers Divided will be a scenario book for the Brothers Against Brothers rule set. At first glance, they are not cheap. At $35 USD (Gettysburg volumes) for a dozen or so scenarios, it works out to be about $3 USD per scenario, which doesn't sound so bad. If you ever have a chance to pick one up and thumb through it, it should take about 3 seconds for you to be totally blown away. First, THE MAPS ARE TO DIE FOR! I have never seen such wonderful maps of battles. They are beautiful works of art (congrats to the Marek/Janci graphics team). The OOB info is very nicely arranged. Everything is in full color. They are peppered with color photos of minis in action, colored period engravings, and even the occasional photo of the site today. So $3 USD per full-color, beautifully rendered scenario is a bargain (average scenario has 6 pages of background info, OOB info, and map). You won't regret picking up one of Scott's scenario volumes. And in the interest of full disclosure, I have never met nor do I have any association with Scott or the Marek/Janci Design company. |

THANK YOU SeattleGamer. That is perfect. This is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you for taking the time to lay that all out. Everyone is so helpful and I truly appreciate your advise and experience so I can spend $$ wisely. Aggie |

No problem, happy to help. I purchased mine through On Military Matters: onmilitarymatters.com Select Wargaming from the left column, then do a search (ctrl+f) for "Enduring" you will find all three scenario books in a row. To find Brother Against Brother select Wargaming Rules from the left column, then search for "Brother Against" and you will find it towards the bottom of the list. There are other places that sell these, this is just where I got my copies (and was happy with the service too). Steve |

Steve, Thank you so much for the unsolicited compliments!!! I think you will like the new BAB scenario book. Despite the relatively high price, these are high cost to produce due to the research costs, graphics, layout, and premium laser printing. This is one case where Ivor and I both believe "you get what you pay for." Thanks again! Scott |

I only mentioned the perception that these are expensive scenario books because it may cause some to say what I first did when I came across them: YIKERS! My first exposure to scenario books was the WWII series called Skirmish Campaign. They sell for $15 USD for about 60 pages, with each usually containing 10 scenarios. That averages $1.50 USD per 4 page scenario (there are historical notes and campaign rules that use up some of the pages). That was my initial frame of reference (cost per scenario). When I started gathering up info on the ACW one of the rule sets I went for was Guns At Gettysburg. There is a separate scenario book for those rules called Heartland. It contains 14 scenarios in 56 pages and sells for $28. USD There are 12 pages of special rules and optional rules for the main set, so the actual scenarios average about 3 pages each. Still, that is $2 USD per scenario. So when I did the math and came to $3 USD per scenario for the Enduring Valor series, I did pause. Then I decided what the heck, buy the pair and see what it's all about. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. As stated above, beautiful, colorful maps, nice layout of the OOBs (again in color), and all the rest combined to make it a delighful purchase. My first impression was WOW! My next thought was "I would have paid more." On the strengths of the Enduring Valor pair, I immediately ordered Undying Courage. And while I was not initially planning to get into ACW skirmish gaming, when I heard there would be a Scott/Ivor scenario book for Brother Against Brother, I immediately ordered the BAB rules. You do indeed get what you pay for with these scenario books. They are well worth the $3 USD per scenario pricetag, given their excellent presentation. One suggestion for you Scott. If you had a free scenario offered up as a pdf download, done just like the scenarios in your books, those folks who might pause at the price would be able to see for themselves just how beautiful they are. Trust me on this, all hesitation would crumble. |
