After Action Report June 20, 2008

Skies over Europe

Our flight of two Mustangs entered a sector that was inhabited by two FW190-A fighters circling above us with altitude. They turned this advantage into a nicely coordinated attack. Their teamwork put my wingman in a predicament. Either cover me or break off of my defense due to pressure from my attacker's wingman. He quickly calculated the odds and broke away. I can't say I blamed him! Fortunately, he made the right choice. I took a little damage and he went un-harmed. Now that we were mixing it up and trading blows, the enemy wingman suffered damage that reduced his armament effectiveness. This caused him to pull in tighter to cover his lead and still be able to deliver a telling blow if an opportunity arrived. This allowed my wingman two close range shots against the enemy's tailing wingman. The first burst shredded his target pretty well (the enemy's pilot armor held up quite well) but it was his second burst that was truly devastating. First, the elevator was shot away and the aircraft pitched out of control. Then a slug entered the cockpit, killing the pilot just as the fuel caught fire and an oxygen bottle exploded!

The lead enemy aircraft, minus his wingman, high-tailed it out of the battle.

mjc,
AARs are a reflection of why I enjoy miniatures and non-computer war-gaming. Visuals are great, (just look at the links/details posted by others) but more importantly, there is time to share, relish and LORD OVER your opponent! Tactically and strategically, I'm able to enjoy the outcome of my decisions. Or not! A worthy opponent is something to be treasured. A game that can also be played solo without taking sides, influencing the outcome, is nearly as good.
