Hi Guys -

Just cruising ebay and came on some unusual 1/144 aircraft that I thought some of you Air guys or Flames of War guys would like. He has some Waco gliders and Italian troop transports plus quite a few other interesting planes. Check 'em out!!!

Yeah…they did sort of appear "Enoch-ian" but I figured that he had just been inspired by the balsa master :)

No names please. :)

Thanks!

Well, I wasn't impressed with the ones I bought.
Wings just flat pieces of balsa no attempt at curves, or airfoil shape. Engines essentially all the same (either round or square!).
Very rough surface with lots of 'tufts' of balsa (IE not sanded at all prior to painting).
They all ended up in the bin.
Hope he has improved.

The ones I bought were a bit rough, as you say. But for the planes that can't be found elsewhere in 1/144, I'll go with them.

I originally made the post below in response to someone lamenting the cost of plastic kits but since it seems to fit in this thread, I've just pasted it in…..

Just in case there are any wargamers out there who are more interested in wasting time than money, check out

this is a group devoted to the scratch-building of models from solid wood. If you have enough time and band-aids you can carve as many game pieces as you want! The forums and the galleries are fun places to browse for inspiration. The gallery section includes a lot of plans, including WWII vintage plans put out by the War Department so that high school kids could build 1/72 scale aircraft recognition models in woodshop for the war effort.

By modern standards the plans aren't very detailed for 1/72scale but would be fine for gaming. You could print them at 50% for 1/144th. Even if you don't plan to do any scratch-building, some of the plans from early 1942 give some perspective on the times. The early plans of Japanese aircraft illustrate just how badly the U.S. was caught off guard by Japan. Some of the earliest Japanese plans look like they were drawn from eyewitness sketches, guesswork, and Frankenstein-like re-assembly of wrecked aircraft. Early Japanese planes asside, overall the plans look like the planes they are supposed to represent. In other areas of the gallery there are also plans for ships, cars, and tanks of various eras, (mostly pre-1960's before plastic kits became popular).

Ooops, it looks like pasting breaks the links…

i dont rate jsm either, same really some interesting subjects.

i'd echo Pbhawkins comments, unless they have improved they are a bit of a caricature of the intended subject.

but, its horses for courses, and many people seem very happy!?
