Some one said in the Why Germans thread that.."The ME 109 and Focke Wulf 190 are symmetric poetry in motion, even when sitting on the ground." I would disagree the P-51D looked 10 times better then the Me-109, and the Fw-190 was just ugly. Why not a poll on the coolest looking fighter of WW2? |

Mosquito Spitfire 1 to XI (without the tropical filter) Aerocobra MME 262 (the shark) Kawasaki Ki 96 Mig 1 and Mig 3 Arsenal VG 33 Dewoitine D.520 for shape. Others for markings. The p51 looked good as a D but not before! |

I'd go with the Corsair. I'd pick the P38 as a close second. |

The P-40 "Flying Tiger". It's the only airplane model I would build as a kid. |

The P38. It was so cool the US Army named its C ration can opener after it. |

I see your P38, and raise you the Fokker G1 – much prettier. For single engine I shall take the delicate curves of the Spitfire. Dom. PS – Those who wrote "Corsair" seek help while you can

Personally I think the Stuka is the iconic aircraft of WWII but that's not a fighter. The Corsair is a great looking ship as is the early Spitfire. I do like the FW 190 it certainly merits consideration mjc |

Hmmm, very hard to choose. The P-51D rates right up there, as do a number of others, e.g.: Spitfires, especially the later marks with the cut down rear fuselage; Typhoon/Tempest – these just exude raw power; Me-109K; Me-163B – who wouldn't want to strap in to one of these?; Me-262A; Ta-152H; Mossie; He-219; Kyushu J7 W1 Shinden, etc. I'm sure I've missed a few too, but that is a decent list. Regards,

I'd say the P-39. Yeah, I know it was a dog above 10,000 ft, but it just screamed Art Deco, and it was very effective at low level, even as a fighter. |

In addition to the P-51D, how about the XP-55 link Though only three were built. I like the early marks of the Spit, but hated those with the clipped wings. And the Westwind Whirlwind link |

Either the Mustang or Spitfire for second place. P40 with Flying Tiger face is simply Da Bomb. |

Grumman Iron Works' last piston engine fighter and first war bird I ever saw perform – the F8F Bearcat. Gaggle I most hate to see coming at me category winner – P-51D. |

I too dream of the P-51. Not just WW2 but it's got to be a top looking plane of ANY era. The P-38, P-40, ME-109, and Spitfire all rank very high but gotta go with the P-51. |

Coolest looking fighter by country: USAAC. – P38 – Because America makes big stuff. USN. – F4U Corsair – As above + inverted gull wing. U.K. – Spitfire I – Battle of Britain Australia – Boomerang (the name) IJN – J2M Raiden – My favorite(especially with lighting bolt) IJAAF – Hayate – Looks powerful (was) Italy – Macchi 202 – Ferrari of the skies Soviet Union – I 16 – super-stubby Poland – PZL11 – Gull wing France – De 520 – Sleek Czech – Avia 534 – Biplane that looks like a monoplane. Germany – Me 262 – They're only cool looking plane. Honorable mention: P26 Peashooter |
Wyatt the Odd | 11 Jun 2008 9:21 p.m. PST |
For coolest looking, I would have to agree with the P-61, Shinden and XP-55 Ascender as having "cool" factor (as opposed to sheer, mechanical beauty). But, I'd also include the XP-67 Moonbat link Now, imagine that puppy equipped with jet engines

I am surprised no one mentioned the Dornier Do 335 Pfeil. I think it is one of the coolest looking planes ever. link It was out of date before the war, but the P-26 was pretty cool too

Tempest = angry Spitfire on steroids. After that pair, the Mosquito. It's a fair way back to everything else, but the good ones always look good. The 109F was almost elegant. |
Fish | 12 Jun 2008 3:26 a.m. PST |
Me262, easily Although, Airacobra and Lightning also do look pretty cool. |

That French plane with the really long nose – don't know what its called, but it looks like a super sports car. |
Photonred | 12 Jun 2008 4:58 a.m. PST |
And one more vote for the ME 262 |
Major Thom | 12 Jun 2008 5:11 a.m. PST |
I have always been partial to the P39 Airacobra, followed closely by the P40 and P38. |
AndrewGPaul | 12 Jun 2008 5:22 a.m. PST |
Agesilaus wins the vacillation of the week award. Not only does he have one plane per country, but for the US and Japan, he can't even manage that! I vote Spitfire. Not the low-level versions with clipped wings, though. The Mustang loses out because of that air intake under the wings. |
