I would like to compile a list of celebrities that wargame and their periods of interests, collections etc.

So, does anyone know any that do?

DeanMoto03 Jun 2008 7:14 p.m. PST

Well, there's The OFM, I think he specializes in "War of Jenkin's Ear" or "First Javanese War of Succession" or something like those… grin

RavenscraftCybernetics03 Jun 2008 7:27 p.m. PST

Vin Deisel is a D&D freak.

John the OFM03 Jun 2008 7:41 p.m. PST

Robin Williams is supposed to be a big 40K Ork fan.

I keep wanting to play War of Jenkin's Ear, but every time I get another brigade painted, Charlize Theron and Jessica Alba come over to "borrow" my figures, and I never see them again.

Jakar Nilson03 Jun 2008 8:02 p.m. PST

Does anyone know of any politicians that are gamers?

Blackhawk103 Jun 2008 8:28 p.m. PST

Billy Crystal is supposedly a 40K player

Will Wheaton and ELijah Wood are known to have been or still are D&D players

Pictors Studio03 Jun 2008 8:46 p.m. PST

Keith Rocco plays Napoleonics.

Jakar Nilson03 Jun 2008 9:06 p.m. PST

As a footnote, Conrad Black does not count as a politician. News magnate, yes.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP03 Jun 2008 9:31 p.m. PST

Robin Williams is indeed a big 40k player, but also likes alternate history games and loves Crimson Skies. I've heard he also got Spielberg into gaming, but I don't know if that's true.

John the OFM: consider yourself lucky to have such starlets borrowing your figures. I always seem to have Abe Vigoda hanging around my game table. Ackkkk!!!!!!!!!

Cerdic03 Jun 2008 10:59 p.m. PST

A Pete and Dud moment coming here……

Patrick R03 Jun 2008 11:04 p.m. PST

The good thing about me being world famous several times over is that nobody knows it. Saves me a lot of hassle too.

14th Brooklyn03 Jun 2008 11:12 p.m. PST

Peter Jackson. AFAIK he not only had the Perrys do an exclusive Great War line for him, but he also bought minis to play out the battle scenes in Return of the King.

James Forrest04 Jun 2008 1:31 a.m. PST

Somebody told me the late great Peter Cushing was a wargamer. Don't know if it was true.

Red358404 Jun 2008 1:38 a.m. PST

I'm sure we've done this before!

Edward Woodward…don't know if he was interested pre-Callan but certainly afterwards

The legendary Derek Guyler…wargames and washboards…what more could you ask for!

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP04 Jun 2008 1:55 a.m. PST

I don't somehow think that Derek would have relished the thought of being called a 'celebrity' in the modern sense. He was a wargamer to a limited extent but mostly a painter and collector of flats, I think.

Frothers Did It Anyway04 Jun 2008 2:14 a.m. PST

Robin Williams is indeed a big 40k player

This summer…Robin Williams IS Grimgore Ironhide..!

Red358404 Jun 2008 2:39 a.m. PST

I've just spotted that he is, in fact, "Deryck" Guyler.

My apologies to the man wherever he is.

I'd agree he probably wouldn't have seen himself as a modern-style celebrity but anyone who was in Please Sir, Sykes and played washboard with Shakin Stevens is pretty damn celebritorious in my book [..and no..I've no idea if that's a real word but it ought to be!].

For our transatlantic colleagues who may be wondering who on earth this giant is….

koyli196804 Jun 2008 2:56 a.m. PST

Peter Cushing collected model soldiers but not a wargamer. I believe he had a considerable collection of 7 years war figurines of about 12 inches high with uniforms made of cloth, leather and metal.

Dont know what happened to his collection……

streetline04 Jun 2008 3:10 a.m. PST

Both me and the chap on the next table at the last Bristol TTS thought we recognised one of the punters as a TV actor, but sadlt couldn't place him….

iceaxe04 Jun 2008 5:26 a.m. PST

RL Stevenson & HG Wells, going back a bit.

I'm told that statistically (therefore it must be true) the rock world has an over & above-average number of train enthusiasts. Pity we don't rate with them, too.

cfielitz04 Jun 2008 5:46 a.m. PST

Do you think celebrities do their own painting and terrain building?

aecurtis Fezian04 Jun 2008 5:53 a.m. PST

The magic eight-ball says, "No."

Allen

Pictors Studio04 Jun 2008 5:53 a.m. PST

No. Or at least a few of them don't for sure.

Mrs Pumblechook04 Jun 2008 5:58 a.m. PST

I know Peter Jackson collects toy soldiers, but I'm not sure if he games

Steve Flanagan04 Jun 2008 6:02 a.m. PST

As a footnote, Conrad Black does not count as a politician. News magnate, yes.

"Convicted criminal" is a good description.

WarWizard04 Jun 2008 6:30 a.m. PST

Frank Sinatra had a huge toy train collection.

Jason Mewes, Jay of Jay and Silent Bob, plays 40k. He purchased terrain from a guy I knew at Dragon Con one year.

nycjadie04 Jun 2008 7:01 a.m. PST

I wonder if Jason Mewes could keep his hand steady enough to paint.

SpuriousMilius04 Jun 2008 7:12 a.m. PST

You could really pack a Wargames Con & get megatons of PR if you could get Robin Williams, Billy Cyrstal & Jason Mewes to compete in a 40K tournament . . . just not Historicon, of course!

Corto Maltese04 Jun 2008 7:55 a.m. PST

I didn't know about Peter Cushing, but Christopher Lee was a collector (although not a wargamer I believe). I remember once seeing him at the old Tradition shop in Mayfair. He cut a rather regal figure, remaining seated while the shop assistant brought him figures to look at. And even though he was sitting down, he very nearly came up to my standing height!

Paul

streetline04 Jun 2008 8:05 a.m. PST

And if they're wargamers, do they hang around here?

Cpt Arexu04 Jun 2008 8:41 a.m. PST

Only when I'm incognito. During my day job, I use my real name.

Your friend in The Great World of Gaming,
Robert Mugabe

KatieL04 Jun 2008 8:51 a.m. PST

Charlton Heston was a gamer.

J K Jerome. Robert Louis Stevenson. HG Wells (of course).

Peter Cushing has been mentioned by several sources as being a wargamer.

Someone did allege Laurence Olivier but without any sources.

legatushedlius04 Jun 2008 9:07 a.m. PST

Mike Myers (Austin Powers) is reputed to be a wargamer with over 20,000 painted figures (genre and period unknown).

edinburghowl04 Jun 2008 9:40 a.m. PST

Jon Bon Jovi? What's less socially acceptable – playing with toy soldiers, or a poodle perm….8-)

Lee Brilleaux Fezian04 Jun 2008 9:44 a.m. PST

There's a great bit in "Achtung Schweinehund" where the author wonders if noted satanist Aleister Crowley was a wargamer, and whether all the blood sacrifices and bestiality were a cover for his interest in 15mm Crimean War.

BunkerMonkey04 Jun 2008 11:32 a.m. PST

Brian May, guitarist for the band Queen and his sons are big time players.

Film director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate, Ronin) collected figures but I don't know if he was a gamer.

Midpoint04 Jun 2008 1:21 p.m. PST

Boris Johnson wargamed at university – amongst other activities. I have recently read he doesn't play anymore but I believe I read some time ago that he still has his collection.

mandt204 Jun 2008 1:35 p.m. PST

Famous Yankee slayer Curt Schilling is a big ASL player. In fact, I think he founded, and owns "Multiman Publishing."

The Game Crafter04 Jun 2008 5:44 p.m. PST

Mario Cumo is said to be a big Napoleonics buff has been seen at historicon a few times

Grunt186104 Jun 2008 6:59 p.m. PST

Jack Black plays Warhammer.

chaos0xomega04 Jun 2008 8:38 p.m. PST

Curt Schilling? Yankee…? I thought he was Red Sox…

Steve Carrel (40 year old Virign) is a gamer. Judging by that movie he does historicals, and judging by SNL he also plays warhammer (he referenced it in a skit he was doing).

Steve Flanagan04 Jun 2008 10:16 p.m. PST

Jason Mewes, Jay of Jay and Silent Bob, plays 40k. He purchased terrain from a guy I knew at Dragon Con one year.

Yes, of course that was a bag of flock. What else could it be?

Static Tyrant05 Jun 2008 2:59 a.m. PST

Ex-Australian Rules Football player and now sports commentator Dermott Brereton was known to shop for 1:72 Napoleonic figures to add to his collection – no idea if he gamed but he certainly bought in style. The HaT figure boxes were located on the bottom shelf of the store I worked in, and this guy was 186 cm tall (over 6', I guess?). He neatly solved this problem … by lying down to peruse the latest releases.

Tommy2005 Jun 2008 7:31 p.m. PST

John Kovalic is a gamer, but it kind of goes without saying, given his realm of celebrity…

Tommy2005 Jun 2008 7:32 p.m. PST

BTW Pictors, I notice nobody asked for details (not that you'd tell)…

Royal Marine06 Jun 2008 12:29 p.m. PST

I've been on telly and I wargame. Does that count?

Cerdic06 Jun 2008 1:10 p.m. PST

Only if you are a member of the royal family….

By John 5407 Jun 2008 3:17 p.m. PST

I got an MBE from the Queen, and I'm a wargamer, does that count?
