I noticed that the Repulse in the first auction has a US flag on the portside rigging off the forward tower. |

The hull on the first vessel has been weathered somewhat, but there is no evidence of any weathering on the decking or the above deck structure. It just looks too pristine in my opionion. |

Beautiful ships. But who's going to pay that kinda money for 1/700 scale ship, no matter how pretty. Yeah, what's this 'show, not sell' bit??? |

Is he using eBay to just show his stuff? Why not use a photo hosting service? |

I noticed that the Repulse in the first auction has a US flag on the portside rigging off the forward tower. Hi Steve, I'm a landlubber, but live in a very nautical area. From the little I know, the jackstaff of a vessel (the "flagpole" at the very back of the ship, usually sticking up off the stern, though in the models here, it looks as if that position is a tower just at the rear gun turrets) carries the flag under which the vessel is registered or the country to which it belongs. Somewhere else in an area that I'd call the main mast (I know I have that term incorrect) is where the flag of the destination port is carried. In this case the ship you mention is on its way to the US, I guess. Insanely expensive, lovely models. -- Tim |

I have never been on a ship that clean. |

I wonder what the insertion fee was for that auction? -Joe |

Inari, I'm not sure where I read it – I think it was in Fine Scale Modeller – but it was an article about why or observing that model ship builders tend to build their ships and not weather them as much as, say aircraft or armour modellers do. -- Tim |

I bet there's a couple of grand in materials there. Doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. Maybe I'm crazy. |

He wants nine large for the things, and then he's charging $50 USD for shipping? Geee. |
Virtualscratchbuilder | 21 May 2008 8:25 a.m. PST |
There is no Repulse in the auction. Just KGV and POW, sisters. |
| HobbyGuy | 21 May 2008 9:37 a.m. PST |
I wonder what the cost of materials really is and how long it took to make. Then you could calculate the cost but an abstract 5k per ship seems too high to me. |
Virtualscratchbuilder | 21 May 2008 10:06 a.m. PST |
$18 USD or $75 USD for the kit (depending on detail level – Tamiya offers two different ones) and about $105 USD for the photo etched stuff. |
| nycjadie | 21 May 2008 10:23 a.m. PST |
I don't know. I have over $500 USD worth of paint in my kit. Plus, brushes, glue, bits, etc. It also looks like there's multiple models on the ship and there's all sorts of extra materials on there. I wonder how much it would cost to commission something like that. I imagine a corporate commission would cost around that much for a detailed and professional model. |

I've really got to starting charging more for painted minis. :) |
| Jovian1 | 21 May 2008 10:57 a.m. PST |
The price for that level of detail seems about right when you consider that there are at least a couple hundred or possibly a thousand hours involved in the assembly, painting, filing, sanding, weathering, and such on those vessels. In doing commission work – you never really make out in terms of your actual time unless you charge prices like that to start with – those are super-detailed and very well executed models. As for costs of the parts – that is all fine and dandy when you consider the initial investment costs of purchasing the kit and all of the add-ons to go with it. However, there is nothing as expensive as time spend actually doing the assembly and modeling work. These are art pieces – not table top game models. Something one would display with pride in an office building or a shrine in one's home, not stick in a box to take it out on naval gaming day at the nearest auditorium or basketball arena. |

If you looked through his pictures, did anyone notice the swastikas drawn on the barbette tops while under construction? What's up with that? |

Hidden swastikas
kinda like "hidden Mickeys" at Disney? |

HMS King George V is wearing a US Flag as well as British ones, which means he has depicted her while serving as part of the Pacific fleet. Time spent is expensive. However the value of any item is not what the creator wants, its only what someone is prepared to pay for it. Therefore it will be interesting to see if anyone is prepared to pay to the level of his expectations. |
