I'm looking for informations about RAF painting schemes (Spitfires and Mosquitoes) during the Israeli Independence War (1948-49). I found some profiles on the Wings Palette website but I don't understand if the Spitfires were painted overall grey or were plain metal. Also the Mosquitoes? Or did they have some camo scheme? Can you help me? Thank you |

Spitfires had been delivered to the Middle East in the wartime Day Fighter Scheme of Dark Green and Ocean Grey uppersurfaces with Medium Sea Grey undersides. They were being repainted in overall Aluminium as they went for major servicing. In January 1949 records show that 208 Squadron only had two "silver" aircraft, with the rest in camouflage. In June 1949, a new "desert" camouflage scheme was introduced for the Spitfires and Tempests in Middle Eastern service. This was Light Slate Grey and Dark Earth uppersurfaces and Medium Sea Grey undersides, with the uppersurface camouflage being to the old "B" scheme. Mosquitos seem to have been in the Night Fighter Scheme, overall Medium Sea Grey with Dark Green disruptive camouflage on the upper surfaces.
