Nice use of the mod.

I've enjoyed the Total War series, so the upcoming "Empire: Total War" will probably be on my 'must-get' list.

Pretty terrible stuff.

donlowry15 May 2008 8:22 p.m. PST

British flags are the wrong color; formations seem much too loose; and lose the adenoidal singer. I gave up about halfway thru.

Footslogger16 May 2008 4:17 a.m. PST

Must remember to put all MY drummers in the front rank. You know it makes sense.

I made it to 5 mins 30.

Thanks for that!

I like the videos with the painted miniatures – like they did with Gettysburg – nicely narrated. Wish someone would do a Napoleonic battle – I would buy it.

nice video
thanks for sharing

I was about to bail too when the music switched over but I made it to the end – neat!

I have all the other Total War games and expect to get this one . I hope the tactical battles are a trifle better than Imperial Glory (fah!) with the invincible militia melee attack!

Bandit17 May 2008 6:36 a.m. PST

Ish.

25 rows of drummers in front of the Guard?
The Guard just sorta saunter in without maintaining ranks or even holding their muskets at the ready?

Away with that.

Cheers,

The Bandit

Okay lemme clear up some stuff because a few of the comments here… well, are making my blood boil a bit;)

This is a video made by a fan of Napoleonic Total War 2, a mod made by The Lordz Modding Collective (LORD Ashram?) for Rome: Total War. All done for free, all available for free, and I hope much better than the original one, where legionnaires faced Gauls. This video is actually from a MOD of The Lordz mod called the extreme mod that made explosions and all much larger; we had nothing to do with that.

Now, the original mod, Napoleonic Total War 2, is a FANTASTIC game and has won award after award for the major leap in programming and gameplay that it contains. However, as a mod, we faced some major obstacles in development because it is based on a game that was not made for this, made instead for swords and shields. For example, no marching with shouldered arms as it cannot be implemented. The formations are what they are; there is very little that can be done to change them. There were no Napoleonic troops in the game, no artillery, no this and that and so on. Even implementing firearms was tricky, as there were none in the original game. There were no loading animations, no artillery animations… the list goes on and on and on.

The amount of work and skill this took is hard to believe.

Now the music in that particular video I cannot vouch for (the last song; just terrible, I had to mute it) but the game itself is solid as hell. I know; we made it that way;) There are VERY few historically innaccurate uniform bits and such, and those that are there are generally just because of the inherent limitations of making a mod. So if you are a button counter… eh, you'll have to find something else to make you happy.

Here are a few videos from The Lordz themselves, our own previews from before we released them original mod, Borodino, which featured the french and russians. We have since added the British, Austrians, Turks, Dutch, Swedes, Brunswickers, Spain, and a few others. Give the videos a look; you can see that we actually did a number of things (for example, proper marching) that, in the end, could not be used in-game, but made for a good looking video nonetheless. And if you can find a better Napoleonic video game, much less a MOD of a game, you let us know;)

Anyway, if any of you have Rome: Total War, I strongly suggest you mod it to NTW2 and play a REAL game;)

yeah the NTW2 mod is great.

and so is the First one for Medieval 1 total war.

Oh, and I enjoyed the videos a bit; could have been better, but I see the work that went into them. Nice work.

Lord Ashram17 May 2008 1:40 p.m. PST

What, no one watched the three videos I linked?

donlowry17 May 2008 2:10 p.m. PST

What's a "mod"?

Lord Ashram17 May 2008 2:42 p.m. PST

Lemme explain:

So the original game is Rome: Total War, a game made by EA. It was fun, but had some flaws (not the least of which was sword fighting games are boring as heck; how many ways are there to run into each other?)

What we at The Lordz did is go in and rebuild EVERYTHING, using the basic engine but getting rid of everything else we could. We recolored the sky and ground, made all new fauna, created all new weapons, built over 200 new models for figures, created some 300 skins for them, recorded new sounds, composed new music, wrote new read-mes, created new info cards, made new maps, created new 3D interfaces, and so on and so forth. So rather than play in Roman times, you can play the basic same game but with Napoleonic troops, tactics, equipment, generals, battlefields, and so on. The work on NTW2 took a solid 3 or 4 years of free work, and is now available to anyone who wants to download it for free. This is called a "mod" because it is a modification of the original game.

Now, it has its shortcomings for sure; the groundscale is a bit off so men move a touch quick, we couldn't impliment certain animations we made because the original game couldn't handle it (we had a REAL nice animation for the drummers, too!) There are TONS of limitations, many of which we managed to get around with some creative fudging. However, some of the limitations are simply beyond our ability to beat, especially since EA is very, very bad about supporting people modding their game.

This isn't the first time we did this; we also did a Napoleonic mod for Medieval: Total War, as well as an American Civil War and an American War for Independence mod for that game. Quite frankly those three games are the best of their kind; in fact, the AWI and ACW games are the ONLY ones of their kind (there are no other multiplayer games for those eras.) Now they all have their limits, of course, but we think they are also a LOT of fun. Trust me, some of the most fun I've had is sending my voltigeurs out to throw back enemy Greenjackets, keeping my lancers nearby to support them, while forming up columns of Frenchmen to crush the British scum before me!:)

Anyway… I do hope people get a chance to peek at the three videos I posted; hopefully they won't offend too much;)

Why do wargamers feel it necessary to use language like 'Neat little Nap Sims Thingy'?
I am sure most adults find it very annoying.
