As I said in another thread, I am donating about a thousand fantasy figures to the local Boys and Girls Club. I'd like the little tykes to have some simple rules that will let them catch on in gaming, quickly. I want these, as I said, to be SIMPLE and FREE. PLEASE don't waste bandwidth telling me why your favorite system is neither simple nor free, but is really the one I should teach them to play. MEPHISTOPHELES

Yes, same question. SONG OF BLADES is great fun, the kids at my school (6th to 12th) love it. But you need dozens of minis to play it, not hundreds. |

Thanks guys, considering the size of my gift, as well as the maximum attention span of 12 year olds, a game that could handle 50 to a hundred figs on a side, in about 2 hours playing time, would be ideal. |

quester I appreciate the offer, but alternate unit activation is exactly the sort of thing that is confusing to novices. |

Surely you can just jot down a few simple rules for them to play by. Here's an example : Each figure has a move rate (say 6" for human foot and 10" for cavalry) and a combat factor (from 1 to 6, 1 is poorly armed and unarmoured, 6 is heavily armoured knight). Player A moves, player B moves, then conduct combat for figures in base-to-base contact. Roll 1 dice, add combat factor, highest wins and loser dies. If more than one figure is fighting against one opponent, roll 1 dice but add all combat factors. There you go, simple rules to get them started. |

For something a bit more advanced (though still pretty simple) I would also recommend Song of Blades and Heroes. It's not free, but at only $4 USD (I think) for the pdf it is hardly going to break the bank. |
