Various sources quote this as being yellow but pictures I have seen seem overwhelmingly orange/ochre.

Can anyone please shed light on this?

I'm doing a unit of these soon myself, and have seen the orangish pictures you're refering too. If memory serves, all the written descriptions make them much more yellow than orange.

Yellow. The H&C book has the color wrong.

I have an 1806 Prussian army (in 28mm) and faced the same question. I painted that unit orange only later to believe that I had erred. I then saw the H&C books -- at that point glad that I did not take the time and effort to repaint the unit. Now, like Goldstar, I am uncertain. I do have a supicion that I have neither the time nor energy nor resources to confirm -- but perhaps someone can confirm or deny. I know that the Swiss red faded to yellow. So, red or yellow seems OK for Swiss. Is it possible (and I do not know either the history or chemistry of the dyes) that this is an issue of an original color and then a faded one? Just a thought.

contemporary prints show yellow – none shows orange

What about yellow and orange stripes? Or half the regiment in yellow and the other half in orange?
