-From the above website…

According to Games Workshop USA Sales Representative Mark Koscielniak, the new Warhammer 40k 5th Edition Starter Boxed Set will include a "Crap-Ton of miniatures".

The new boxed starter, due out in September of this year, will include the popular "mini-rulebook", dice, measuring sticks and the proverbial French "Crap-Ton" of miniatures including:
1– Space Marine Commander (full sprue)
1– Space Marine Tactical Squad (10 models)
1– Space Marine Terminator Squad (5 models)
1– Space Marine Dreadnought

AND THAT'S NOT ALL!
The set will ALSO include:

1– Ork Warboss
2– Ork Boyz Mobs (20 models total)
1– Ork Nob Mob (5 models)
3– Death Koptas

The retail price on this tremendous deal will be a ridiculously low $59.99! A quick analysis of the retail value of this set is valued at a cool $262 USD bucks, and that's not even counting the retail value of the 3 Death Koptas, the "mini-rulebook", or the dice!
The new 5th Edition starter will be called "Battle for Black Reach".
The regular hard cover 5th Edition rulebook is due out in July, with a retail price of $49.99.
Even with this great value, Games Workshop Inc. has instructed their retailers to warn consumers that in order to off-set this incredible value,GW is forced to break the promise of not raising any prices for 5 full years. As a result, all of the GW starters (40k, Fantasy and Lord of the Rings) will now be sold at $59.99, rather than the former $49.99.
Even so, the values of these starters are astounding, as entire armies can be built for the cost of a couple of starters.
Be sure to place your pre-orders early so that you don't miss out on this incredible deal!

Please…. maybe a $2 USD increase in plastic costs per box. Maybe.

TSB: You said it, man. What irony!

If measured in dog years, then that would actually be 5 months and 3 weeks…. ;)

Tremendous deal? You can't possibly tell me that 262USD is a fair price… I also enjoyed the phrase:"…forced to break the promise (of not raising any prices)"
No doubt the complete 5th ed. book will include 30pgs of rules, a crap-load of background and modelling info ,and no army lists… Okay, okay, I'm done now…

I was hoping the "silliness" would be taken out of the ork line… 3rd edition was a BIG step up from 2nd in that regard. Deth Koptas is a bad sign.

Sadly, I was looking through my copy of Rogue Trader yesterday… I was actually considering going back to that system.

The Sentient Bean14 May 2008 8:37 p.m. PST

Hey Mathias,

I couldn't disagree more. I love the silliness and 2nd ed!

If you take out the silliness what's left?

Dr Mathias Fezian14 May 2008 10:05 p.m. PST

Sigh… I have to admit I DID like using Pulsa Rokkits…

And even that's stretching it….

Dances With Words Fezian15 May 2008 2:11 a.m. PST

so does that mean all the 4th edition figures, rules and stuff folks have purchased won't be 'tournament legal' etc after this set releases? (is that how it works???)

I'm so glad I just pick up 'bitz' for mods and kitbashing…as I got burned out 20 years ago with Star Fleet Battles 'dueling rulesets'…

Does this mean they will nerf Terminators and Dreadnoughts in favour of something else ?

streetline15 May 2008 3:55 a.m. PST

If the new box has the full new rules, I'll buy it. If it has a cut down version, I won't. I'm not paying £40.00 GBP quid or whatever it will be over here (I've heard £30.00 GBP and I've heard £50) for half a game…

Dropzonetoe Fezian15 May 2008 4:56 a.m. PST

I'm might get it depending on the quality of figs of course. GW's best recent releases have been the box sets IMHO(Macragge and BFSP)so I hope this one follows the trend.

I could care less about the rules though.

I just want the figs for my nephews.

TheWarStoreMan15 May 2008 5:44 a.m. PST

Im gonna love splitting that box for bits :-)

Pictors Studio15 May 2008 6:17 a.m. PST

I'm looking forward to it. At $60 USD for both orks and space marines I might pick up a couple of boxes to do armies for both. I already have a ton of space marines but more can't hurt, I suppose. Maybe I'll use them as Horus Heresy era marines of some chapter, like maybe a World Eaters heresy era company.

The orks are just cool and I'd echo the sentient bean with a cheer for more silliness in that line. The randomer (sic) the better.

basileus6615 May 2008 7:04 a.m. PST

So… No Necrons? Bwuahhh! Too bad.

AndrewGPaul15 May 2008 7:45 a.m. PST

Is 5th edition going to be revolutionary, like 3rd was, or evolutionary, like 4th? If the latter, which I expect, all the army books will continue to be current (until they revise them, in due course).

I presume the minis will be the simplified 'snap-together' type, like the 4th edition box, rather than the full multpart sprues like 3rd edition, or the separate box sets.

Dropzonetoe Fezian15 May 2008 8:02 a.m. PST

Andrew rumor is the majority are snap togeather, the commander however is a "full sprue" So new players could "grow" to doing more complex figures. Plus it allows to convert a bit your "commander" figure

Also to be honest I don't see anything wrong with the last batch of snap-together marines they put out. They are no 2nd ed single pose garbage and mix will with standard more expensive marines.

For line troops I wouldn't notice.

Pictors Studio15 May 2008 8:42 a.m. PST

"Please…. maybe a $2 USD USD increase in plastic costs per box. Maybe"

Yeah, but he wasn't referring to a cost in plastic. Cost in business is not just about raw materials. There is a lot that goes into this, in this case opportunity cost. People who might have bought a $30 USD dreadnought, a $30 USD box of marines and a $50 USD box of terminators before will now, at least some of them, buy this instead.

That is a $40 USD opportunity cost that GW is missing out on. So there is a cost to off set and it isn't in increased amounts of plastic used.
