Anyone know of online plates showing the uniforms of French Marines (or naval infantry I'm not sure they had seperate Marine units) circa 1700 or anytime shortly thereafter. I need to paint up some soldiers for my Pirates to fight and want someone other than red-coated Brits to take on.

I know of no such plate, but written texts all suggest that by then the Compagnies Franches de la Marine already use the same colors pattern as during the FIW: medium blue stocks, breeches, waistcoat and facings, off-white coat, metal = gold.

Unless your Pirates are from the Barbary Coast and the action set in Mediterranean Sea: I believe that the Regiment des Galeres attached to the Flotte du Levant was all in scarlet?

Best,
JL

Osprey Men-at-Arms Louis XV's Army (5) Colonial and Naval Troops; Plate H Naval Troops only shows c 1740 Galley and ship Marines. So it may be to far from your c 1700 request.

Abdul666lw has given their description above.

Good Luck.

The Company of Military Historians did an article about such troops, and plate, but I believe from the Rev War period, so no help there I guess.
