This will be my second Historicon. The question is should I bring my wife. I'm thinking about going to Lancaster Friday morning and staying through Sunday. The wife is not a gamer. In fact, she would be bored to tears at the Host. However, she has said that she'd be happy to sit by the pool and do some horseback riding (not at the same time, of course). Truthfully, I'd love her to come as I'm unlikely to stay at the Host the entire time and it would be nice to do some exploring in Lancaster. So for those with other's that aren't gamers, what's your experience?

Sure, just give her the car to explore the area. BEware if she likes quilts.

Right at the bottom of the hill is an outlet mall.
Right across the street is Dutch Wonderland amusement park.

You can also accumulate Guilt Points to be cashed in at any time she chooses.

I started coming to Historicon right before the divorce, so I am hardly a Vergil to guide you in this. grin

Always, even if she doesn't game that does not mean she doesn't like to get out. Take her along and make a fun trip out of it, took my better half to GenCon one year had a great time…except for her buying a new wardrobe..GOOD GRIEF…

My wife and daughter always comes with me. They also has not interest in gamming. But they take the car and visits the outlets and other places of interest in Lancaster. She always finds something new. My wife and daughter do lunch together, they I joing them for dinner.
I think the Lancaster area has a lot to offer for famalies.
My wife loves visiting there.

I split the days half gaming and half with the family. For family activities we did:

Strasbourg Railroad
Buggie Rides
Hershey Chocolate Factory
Intercourse Canning Company
Bird in hand shopping
Amish Farm Tour
A couple of roadside stands, etc.

My wife loves going to Cold Wars in Lancaster, there is a lot to do around there, after 4 or 5 years, she is still finding new things of interest. She skips Historicon because of the heat, but would otherwise be there. She skips Gettysburg because there is nothing nearby, and it bores her to tears. Your mileage may vary.

Personally, other than a couple of restraunts, I have never seen what Lancaster has to offer, I am always too busy from sun up to sun down and later playing games!!!!

Check out the local winery located in Intercourse.

We'd love to meet her, so we vote for you dragging her along.

It's definitely worth one spousal bring-along.

My wife makes it a point to come. She usually walks around the dealer room with me or accompanies me to a game until the "gamer funk" becomes too much for her to bear, upon which she takes the car to the outlet malls. We meet up for dinner after she's done.

But then I'm usually only there for a day ('cause the gamer funk gets to me too – why is hygiene not important to some folks?) and live within 2-hours of the Lancaster Host.

The McBride women seem able to find plenty to do in the area. Shopping, the Amish culture, etc.

Horseback riding? I am jealous.
I will be in the Dealers Hall ALL Day.

Well, I am bringing my wife to KublaCon for the weekend. I think that she is going to go off and check out San Francisco while I get my game on. We both are looking forward to it!

I've never brought the wife to a convention, but we live within 45 minutes of Lancaster, and she loves to go shopping down there. It's a whole day event when she goes: two outlet malls, and Park City mall on the other side of the city. If your wife is up for a drive, there is also King of Prussia down the turnpike. I always like a trip down there because Rock Bottom Brewery is in the mall. I can drink while she shops!

My wife and daughter go to Cold Wars with us and go shopping, hit the little towns etc like everyone stated. If she likes a massage and spa day, there is a spa orange at the netherlands inn. my wife and daughter loved it.

rddfxx14 May 2008 2:51 p.m. PST

My nongaming wife comes with me and loves to work the outlet malls. She is also a great help setting up, taking down games.

miscmini Fezian14 May 2008 3:20 p.m. PST

wouldn't even consider it unless she brought up the idea.

Neotacha14 May 2008 3:50 p.m. PST

If she's willing to come, bring her. You know best what your marriage will stand, though.

Rudysnelson14 May 2008 6:21 p.m. PST

My wife came to the show once back in the 1980s. She never asked to come again. A crowded ride with all the store products.

Plenty for them to do especially shopping.
