Just to check my understanding of FPW practice: as I understand it, only regiments carried flags, not individual battalions -- except for French Turco battalions.

If that is correct, which battalion within the regiment would carry the flag. It does not matter much for French line, but with the different colour of belts and straps between Musketeer and Fusileer battalions in line regiments, it may be possible to get it "wrong" for the Prussians.

Anyone know if Bavarian practice was the same, BTW? I am not planning any other German states in my army at the moment, so the rest are less of a concern.

AFAIK, the 2nd battalion carried the regimental colors – both for the French and the Prussians.

I think each Prussian battalion had a color.

The first and third line battalions (French) and the Chasseurs a' pied battalions carried battalion fanions that were 30 cm square. One was red and white halved diagonally and one was yellow I forget which was which right now.

This subject has been extensively debated on TMP, most recently in a thread entitled "Flags for 1870 Prussians". To summarise, flags were carried by all Prussian and German Allied (including Bavarian) Battalions. Many of the older Prussian flags (1st and 2nd Foot Guards, and first 30 or so grenadier and line regiments) were terribly decayed with age, to the extent that large numbers of them appeared as pracically bare poles. French regiments carried only one flag, carried, as Dave says, by the 2nd battalion.

"has been extensively debated on TMP"

Hence my Talk About TMP request for "tree search" -- thanks, everyone. I know repeasted requests for the same information can get a bit annoying.

Lentulus,

No problems. My comment was just to help speed your search for the info, not an indication of irritation! Good luck with those Bavarians! By the way, what scale are you using, and whose flags? My FPW are all 10mms, largely using the Pendraken range, which is getting bigger by the day, equipped with Baccus 6mm range flags. These look good, even on 10mm figures, and are amongst the most accurate and extensive ranges out there. But then I would say that, as I'm the flag nut who did a lot of the trawling around for source information. The beautiful artwork, however, is all down to Peter Berry's own fair hand!
