My Sharp Practice rules and miniatures arrived today!
Both the rules and the 2 minis that came with them look great. Does anyone know which figure ranges are compatible?

Thanks in advance

i believe it says inside who made the figures and that they produce a napoleonic range

regards

jim

The figures are from the newly formed and not quite launched yet range from ALban Miniatures.

And I agree they are fine scale sculpts.

infman14 May 2008 3:31 a.m. PST

Hi
I've had a look at the Alban Miniatures site but was wondering if anyone knew of other compaatible ranges. They are certianly a lot smaller and finer than Foundry etc. More like my LOTR figures

pointyjavelin14 May 2008 3:37 a.m. PST

Got my Sharp Practice today too, Figs are lovely, will compare them when I get home but at first flush would make Front Rank look like Mini Hulks!

My query is – what about the cards, is a DIY best?

Anyway, look like fun, plenty scope for umpired campaigns.

Norman D Landings14 May 2008 3:38 a.m. PST

Not 100% sure about these figures…

They're both doing the "moving in one direction while looking backwards over one shoulder" thing, which I've never really liked, but that's just a matter of taste.

Having said that, they are lovely figures, and by far the best representations of Sharpe and Harper I've seen.
Much better sculpting than Redoubt's, and without the '28mm dwarfism' of Chiltern.

I currently use 'Greenjackets' for Nap. skirmish, but I'm sorely tempted by this set….

TheMackster Fezian14 May 2008 3:39 a.m. PST

Based on your initial impressions of the enclosed minis, would you consider them a good fit for most 25mm Napoleonics or are they really 28mm?

Mine haven't arrived yet and I'd like to know before placing an order for 25mm or 28mm figures to use with them.

infman14 May 2008 3:52 a.m. PST

"moving in one direction while looking backwards over one shoulder" would have earned my guys a kick in the butt, not too fussed on my mini's doing it either!

I'm not sure if they would work with 25mm. They are 27-28mm from bottom of the foot to eye and 30mm from bottom of the foot to top of head. I don't have any larger Napolenonics anymore, only 6mm and 15mm to compare.

They are certianly nice little figures all the same

pointyjavelin14 May 2008 4:03 a.m. PST

URGH, just read the Intro and see the cards are a free download on the Toofat Lardies Yahoo site.

Also had a look at the Foundry page again, lots of lovely figs crying out for skirmish.

If the Sharpie and Harper figs are bigge than the others, then thats all to the good – they were Big Men!

legatushedlius14 May 2008 4:04 a.m. PST

I got mine too! This could actually mean I could game Napoleonics in the Peninsula withiout buying 1000 figures.

They are interesting sculpts because they are more anatomically correct than nearly all other makes. My first thought was "they have very small heads" but actually they are properly proportioned. This may mean they don't go with anything!

I put them next to some Foundry Marines and they looked very small. Next to the Perry figures they looked OK as they are slim too.

I will put some pictures up on my blog this evening..

basileus6614 May 2008 4:35 a.m. PST

The figures are, sizewise, 28mm from the soles to the eyes. But they are made in the 'proportionate' school, i.e. less bulkier than other ranges, even Perry. Thus why, at first glance, they look smaller.

I am not sure upon them, but I will not make my mind until I will paint them… The final test is the brush! If the Brush loves the minis I'll love them too. If it doesn't… well, neither do I.

vtsaogames14 May 2008 5:16 a.m. PST

Just primed mine. They look really, really good.

toofatlardies14 May 2008 5:42 a.m. PST

Gents

I think that Basileus is right in using the term "proportionate school". Over the past twenty years there has been a trend towards figures that are somewhat grotesque or cartoonish in their proportions.

Manufacturers are rightly criticised if their scale models of AFVs are incorrect in their proportions, and personally I prefer the idea of a miniature figure having the same proportions as a human being, what is more I believe that over the next few years that is the way that the hobby as a whole will go.

As a result we asked Richard Ansell, whom we believe to be one of the best sculptors in the hobby, to produce two figures that looked like people, rather than a person in a comic book. We're really pleased with the results, we hope you will be too.

One day all wargames figures will look like this!

Cheers

Well said Rich, well said. Ansell's sculpts are really fine works of art and I am really looking forward to seeing how the Alban Miniatures line progresses. I plan to buy lots of them if the Sharpe/Harper samples are any indication of how they will look.

Check out the TAG 1809 Austrian range that Richard Ansell is sculpting – these should be similar in style. If these figures don't get you excited, then nothing will. They are superb.

Off the top of my head, I think that the Connoisseur range of figures would be compatible in terms of overall height and slendernesss vis a vis the Alban/TAG figures. Although note that Gilder's Connoisseur figures have a more "abstract" appearance to them whereas the Ansell sculpts look like real people.

RSM has one French fusilier in shako, sculpted by the late Steve Hezzlewood, that also is done in a similar style.

got mine to day do, to bad I'm doing 40mm skirmish, I almost want to do 28mm just so I can use them

The Hound14 May 2008 8:10 a.m. PST

Got my Sharp Practice book and the figures yesterday. The figures are excellent and the Rules as I looked through them are good too.

vdal181214 May 2008 9:08 a.m. PST

I'm thinking about buying the PDF of the rules, can someone who already owns the rules please tell me how many pages in the rulebook. And of course how they are liking them.

Thanks

Vidal

I'm in discussion with Richard Ansell about doing 40mm versions. Won't be anytime soon he is very busy! Will let you know if/when it comes off.

Fast work, GF!
See you've gone for a 'scruffy blonde' Sharpe – a la Sean Bean – rather than the novel's dark-haired version.

Gunfreak14 May 2008 12:20 p.m. PST

well the model is based on Bean, they even sculped his ass just like from the movies

i'm very happy with them, deffenetly my best 28mm work

Are the rules image heavy? color pics and all that or is it something perfectly suitable for a PDF. If it's glossy and all I'd rather have it bound from TFL.

Gunfreak14 May 2008 1:26 p.m. PST

nah, it's all black and white

The Hound14 May 2008 1:52 p.m. PST

Legatushedlius, if you're planning to paint yours IAW the paperback novel covers, I do hope you'll forego the green Rifle shakos!

Well spotted on the French pack; it would have white straps then, right?

Would the rules be good for 40mm?

Earthquake15 May 2008 1:48 a.m. PST

Hopefully – that's why I bought them :-)

…but haven't really had chance to have a look yet, so I'll let you know more after I've read through them a bit more.

They strike me as being much like TW&T, so I don't see why they shouldn't work with 40mm.

legatushedlius15 May 2008 3:43 a.m. PST

Allen,

I'd forgotten about the green shakos!

I actually started painting them this morning when I should have been packing for my trip to Paris and as a result have forgotten to pack my wash bag!
