I'm looking to field two armies for the Thirty Years War. Being on a budget, but wanting the massed unit effect, I'm thinking of using 10mm. Can anyone recommend some lines out there. Can I use ECW minis? I've searched around the TMP and the internet myself but would like to hear from you. BTW: This latest "need" started with a friend telling me how much he loves to game the Renaissance period, which came about becuase we were talking about playing "Field of Glory", I did some research on Renaissance gaming and told him about the rules Maximillian,( which he brought) my friend then let me borrow "Renaissance Armies" by George Gush, I felt myself getting drawn to the 30 years war and then I watched some You Tube movie trailers about battle of Rocroi, someone had posted on TMP here and that lead me to downloading the rules "Father Tilly", that I had read about also on TMP. Wow!!! And now I'm here in the Renaissance Discussion Board:-) Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks; Joe |

Joe, I went with Pendraken for 10mm TYW. They have a few packs specific to TYW and a wide variety of ECW packs. I mixed the TYW musketeers with the ECW ones as well as the ECW armored and unarmored pike. I am well pleased with the results. For rules, you might also want to look at Basic Baroque, which is the Renaissance supplement to Basic Impetus dadiepiombo.com/bbaroq1.html Tom Tom

You can probably get away with ECW figs for most of it. I use a mix of AIM and Old Glory for my stuff. These rules should work for the later period of the TYW, they are based on Warmaster Fantasy, although you could probably work them with the ancient version as well. pictorsstudio.com/WMECW.htm |

Thanks Tom and Scott; Great info and links to sites. I'll take time and look over Basic Baroque and Warmaster version rules, plus the three miniature lines you both mentioned. I do already have Warmaster and WMA rules, although I am looking also at the Father Tilly rules. But with all of these sites and accompanying eye candy, I'll have a good idea of what to use. My "Renaissance" friend has matching armies ready to go for the Italian Wars and Wars of Religion. I'm planning on returning the favor to him for the later Thirty Years War or ECW. Good gaming; Joe |

I joined the OG Army last year for this very idea. I went with Old Glory based for Father Tilly and can do the OB for Leuthen. I used AIM for alot of cav and Scots. The strips (OG) work well for 10mm and the give a really cool "packed in " look to your units. If nothing else, I'd use OG for the pike. Regards, John |

Thanks John; I was just looking through the "Father Tilly" website and checked out the OBs for different battles. The packed in look is exactly what I want for my pikes. One question: Did you build your armies just for the OB at Leuthen or did you build generic forces and have enough to do that particular battle. thanks; Joe |

Check out some of my units on the Father Tilly group. A mix of OG and Pendraken. Someday, I may actually finish the project. Joe |

I LOVE the AIM Ecw figs. I dumped all my Essex, Frei Korps, Soldiers and Swords (they did have some cool personality figs) and Minifigs once I saw the AIM. I supplemented their generals with Old Glory ones. There is a pretty decent size difference between the two, though. I WANTED to love Father Tilly. But unless they have changed they were way to cumbersome with the math involved for me. I emailed the author and asked about using a different mechanic to achieve the same result. Said he was keeping the cumbersome way. Seemed like a nice and well informed guy. Website is a treasure of great stuff. But man, I wouldn't touch the rules for anything. YMMV. Thanks, John |

Joe, I took the OB from the rules, added it all up and made my purchases. I figured if I could do that one, I'd have enough for any other battle of that period of the war. It's one of the few (prob the only project) that I've ever gotten beyond 75% finished. I have to finish the Catholics (mainly basing) a few stands of cav, and all the arty and I'll be done. One of the things people dislike about OG is that you have to drill out the hands, but once it's done the pikes all stay in place and make for a much more secure figure. Good luck! John |

Thanks John; Good idea. I know what you mean about gaming projects, I have several ongoing projects, including building the Franco-Prussian War OBs in 10mm for the St. Privat scenario in Volley & Bayonet. That's probably about 70% complete. Take care; Joe |

I have used Chipco's Age of Gunpowder rules for refighting Lutzen. I was very pleased with the results. I simply had each stand represent a certain number of men IIRC, instead of the DBA style armies the rules suggest. Thanks, John |
