I'm building a 15mm early German army (DBX basing) and I was wondering what fantasy elements I might add to it. It's about 175 figures so far, so I'm not going to restrict myself to HOTT basing for larger creatures and or warmachines.

does anyone have any ideas or miniatures suggestions? I'm looking for something with a distinctly Germanic flavor. Pictures would be welcome.

I was thinking of converting a unit of cavalry that rides the jointless elk described by Caesar.

Thanks,
-Joe

There are lots of ideas here:

And this looks promising:

I thought about taking that class while I was at Pitt. I just never had the space in my schedule.

Boars, says I; either humans or something else riding boars, or stampeding pigs led by some tuskers, as a disordering preliminary to the real attack.

I'd throw in a couple PZ VI's myself, as long as we are talkign fantasy additions.

Beer elemental or a Keg Golem :)

Germanic 'totemic animals' such as boars (as per doc mcb), bears, wolves, ravens, raptors(hawks falcons eagles-not dinos!)

Any oversized versions of these can make an appearance

also giants, some form of dragon or serpent maybe.

One interesting source is the Gallehus Horns-these were golden horns found in a Danish peat bog-sadly they were stolen and melted down, but not before casts and illustrations of the images on the horns were made.

Some of the images involve a multi-headed giant, various serpents, and other animals. At least one figure is thought to be a familiar god-one warrior on the horn has only one hand so might represent Tyr/Tiwaz.

You need cavalry. I think a unit of "lost" Templars who get to you via a stargate, is a good idea.

How about bearmen/werebears. I am eventually going to offer a Fantasy Early German bearclan HOTT army. You can see the Splintered Light bearmen here link . Giants would also work link

The Norse Gods from Bronze Age Miniatures would also work as deities.

European bison or wisent.

Mount a unit of berserker on those.

Mercenary Gnome berzerkers.

You can't go wrong with those…. ;)

Cap'n – is that the same as an auroch?

The Last Conformist13 May 2008 2:02 a.m. PST

No, a wisent is not the same as an aurochs. It's closely related to the American bison, whereas the aurochs is the wild progenitor of domestic cattle.

Now, either is a big fierce animal that would be a nice addition to a fantasy early Germanic force.

"Cap'n – is that the same as an auroch?"

No. It looks almost exactly like a bison, so you can just use bisons from Peter Pig or Minifigs, or if you prefer something a little larger maybe Preiser HO scale.

Thanks gents. I was thinking of a quote from Caesar: 'These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, color, and shape of a bull. Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied.'
TLC: Agreed – both sound like they might fit the bill :)

Cheers
Paul.

I thought a wisent was the body of governing dudes in pre-conquest England?

No, that's the bison. :)
