I'm getting ready to paint up 25mm napoleonics – french, british, spanish, etc for the penninsula. Are there any paint sets available for the nationalities out there that anyone might recommend? For those who paint with Vallejo paints can I please get some uniform color recommendations? My intentions are NOT to paint collector quality – just a base color with a lighter color for hi-lites. Thanks, Mike mparrott429@comcast.net |

How can anybody know? Even surviving cloth does not retain its original hues. Ask how I know? No Templar habit of the period looks any whiter than a fresh burlap sack! If the color was white, count on bleached linen or wool; then wash it down really well with "dirt" to sepia to "mud". If the color was imperial blue, it is either more blue or more grey; then wash it down really well with "dirt" to sepia to "mud." If the color is scarlet, pick something with a tertiary cast to it; then wash it down really well with "dirt" to sepia to "mud." You get the idea. Only the most severe Nappies will get knotted with this approach. And you can whup them on the battlefield to put their opinions in proper perspective. (of course you could always change to the real deal and play Crusades; the troops are very user friendly to paint up, and the arguments a lot less common or severe, just a thought) |

Using Vallejo's, here's my method for French blue: first coat of Dark Prussian Blue, second coat of Blue. Looks like this : link We all know that there's a big difference between what they really looked like and how we portray/paint them. But really, who wants to paint every one of his soldiers in a mess of grey and brown? Plus, they did fought some battles in pristine Full Dress (Wagram). |

Archiduc, Your Regt 61 de la Ligne,Fusilier Tambour in "Grande Tenue" The cordon de shako, lace & pompom in rose/pink, what source did you get the information from? Just interested. Regards, |

Colbert De mon imagination! I searched for a long time for any information on the 61e de Ligne, but could not find anything. But I like distinctive drummers for French line, as it allows me to easily recognize regiments on the gaming table, and it looks really good (and breaks the monotony of painting French line). I did base the Drummer uniform on another regiment though. The full story of this drummer and of my 61e de Ligne can be found here, last article on the bottom of the page : link |

Knight Templar and ArchiducCharles – thanks for the advice. I think I may have asked the question incorrectly – what I was looking for was what paint lines/ paint colors people used to paint their miniatures. Thanks, Mike |

To ArchiducCharles – I really like the idea of putting the mounted officer in there with the boys. Well done! Mike |

I use mostly Vallejo's paints with some GW and a few Foundrys. My inks are Windsor & Newton and GW. You can pretty see all my paints on my Workbench link As far as what specific colours I use, well that varies depending on the units. Thanks for the kind words on the french unit; if you like those, wait until you see the rest of the Division. I should have pictures in a few weeks. |

I bought the Foundry set a couple of years ago and haven't regretted it. Not cheap, but the design of the set is good and as colour mixing is a weakness I find the shade-triples improve my speed and efficiency greatly. |
