1. RORKES DRIFT (Done, but I play this every 3 years or so anyway
how many Rorkes Drifts do I have left?) 2. BALACLAVA (Done, yesterday. Got minced by Steve's Russian guns, but loved every minute of it) 3. D-DAY (Done, several years ago, all 5 beaches and 4 DZs in one game over 2 days) 4. MARKET GARDEN (Done, a while back now, all the way from Belgium to Arnhem. Made it to the south end of Arnhem bridge, but north end was long since surrendered). 5. BATTLE OF BRITAIN (Done. Persuaded hundreds of people to sponsor RAF squadrons for charity at £1.00 GBP a squadron. One visitor at Derby many years ago insisted on sponsoring a Heinkel squadron
he was German, and they subsequently plastered Biggin Hill, so he spent wisely!) 6. MIDWAY (Done. All American carriers at the bottom of the Pacific, what a day for the Imperial Navy that was) 7. WATERLOO (Done. The cream of Ney's cavalry sacrificed at the feet of the Brunswickers steadfast musketry
what?) 8. GETTYSBURG (Done. Can't remember a blessed thing about it, so I'm guessing I may have lost. Shall have to do it again sometime) 9. SOMME (Done. Well, the first day, anyway. Glorious yet horrendous, is the best description) 10. THE ALAMO
NOT DONE YET! Is this the one that is keeping me young (well, alive, anyway) in anticipation? How about your Top Ten? |

Did midway once, all the landed on the island, even the japanese ones, you can guess why I am sure
Other than that, that is a good list. Maybe the big 4 of Marlborough to add, none of them were walkovers, the difference was literally his and Eugenes superior command. Always fancied Antietam and Shiloh from the ACW as well. the idea of a D Day of all 5 beaches and lz's in one game, now that I would love a part of, even if as photographer. Ditto for Arnhem, although I have done Frost, we held for 9 days and XXX corps made it, Oustriham was wiped out though, the German hit there thinking he could take it and then the bridgehead
Crecy would be another good one, if nothing else it would be one spectactular tabletop. And I have always hankered for Davouts command at Auerstadt, to see what a I could make of it. |

I think my top ten would include a number of the above, Waterloo, Balaclava and Marlborough's for sure. I'd also like to do a big El Alamein game. I've done parts of it plenty of times, but a big one on a huge table would be great. Marston Moor is another on my list as well as the relief of the Siege of Vienna and some of the battles before and after that. I'm well on my way to both, although all I need for Marston Moor at this point are the Scots. Pharsalus is another one. I'll start working on that when the Wargames Factory plastics are released. |
Der Alte Fritz | 11 May 2008 8:25 a.m. PST |
My list would include: Waterloo, Borodino, Wagram ,Auerstadt and Quatre Bras from the Napoleonic Era (I've done Austerlitz, Leipzig and Dresden at the WHC in Scarborough) Rourke's Drift The Alamo Blenheim Gettysburg – all three days (I've done 1st day about 6 times) Shiloh |

1. Arnhem. Done several times ranging from Frost at the bridge and fighting in the corridor to the complete campaign three times. The Allies won the campaign once. 2. Waterloo. Done twice. France 1, British 1. 3. Koeniggratz. 4. Operation Epsom. Done bits but never the whole thing. 5. Arras (1940) – never got around to this for some reason. 6. Operation Crusader. Done. British won. 7. Operation Bagration, or at least more of than the bits I've done. 8. Cambrai. Done twice. 9. Solferino. This one is more of a challenge than Koeniggratz, it is huge. 10. Operation Goodwood. Done the whole thing once, worth doing again. Done lots of bits. |
