Well
Seems that things are moving along with the Conan movie due out next year. I just realized
That means a miniatures line. It is unfortunate that GW will probably wind up with it, but from what the producers of the show have been saying; they want the look of the movie to be as believable as LotR (More or less easy as REH didn't have many "Monsters" as such). Of course, someone like Wargames Factory or Warlord Miniatures might throw their hat into the ring and bring us a line of affordable plastics of a quality as high or higher than GW's work, and have a FoG supplement for the game as well. Of course, it would need to have a game like GW's LotR to do "Heroic" Combat in order to sell it to most kids
I am just looking forward to a decent set/line of Hyborian miniatures

They must have Ahnold involved somehow. |
| Judas Iscariot | 10 May 2008 6:11 a.m. PST |
Unfortunately, Ahnuld is playing the role of the Governor of California right now, and cannot be free to be involved in Conan (From the Conan Movie web-site)
I think that there is a You Tube teaser trailer available. They are getting a complete unknown to play Conan, but are going to be having named stars in other roles. The teaser trailer looks cool
Oh, and he is going to keep the same sword that Ahnuld had in the first two movies (Sort of, it has been re-tooled to a slight degree) |

Isn't there supposed to be an animated movie/series coming out too? I actually wouldn't mind GW doing Conan. I like the LOTR system, and their sculpting style generally suits the Barbarian slasher style. Actually what would be great would be if Mark Copplestone somehow did the sculpts :D AX |
| axabrax | 10 May 2008 7:09 a.m. PST |
PS: Anyone have a link to the trailer? I can't find it on youtube |
| mweaver | 10 May 2008 7:51 a.m. PST |
GW has done a good job with the LotR miniatures, I think (including tons of excellent and cheap plastic sculpts), so I wouldn't mind seeing them do Conan figures. My main regret about a new Conan film is that Basil can't do the soundtrack. |
| Ivan DBA | 10 May 2008 8:36 a.m. PST |
We might hope for a lind of miniatures, but don't count on it. LOTR was the exception in that department. mweaver- I second your sentiment about Poledouris. |
| Zagloba | 10 May 2008 9:05 a.m. PST |
Fantasy Flight will be carrying the Conan boardgame. Maybe they'll do a minis line as well- they seem to be into everything these days. Rich |
Wyatt the Odd | 10 May 2008 10:03 a.m. PST |
The lead role still hasn't been cast, according to IMDB. The last bit I'd heard was that Gerard Butler (King Leonidas) was nominally selected as he can not only act, but his body style is more in keeping with Howard's description of Conan. Governor Conan the Republican has said that he's not accepting any acting gigs until his term as governor ends – which is 2010, I believe. It is possible, I suppose, that he could do a one or two day cameo

Third the comment about Poledouris. Hm. Decent Hyborian miniatures

Well
Seems that things are moving along with the Conan movie due out next year. Like what? I just realized
That means a miniatures line. Says who? but from what the producers of the show have been saying; they want the look of the movie to be as believable as LotR Where have they said this? (More or less easy as REH didn't have many "Monsters" as such). Not read any of the books then? |
| mweaver | 10 May 2008 1:29 p.m. PST |
Been a long time since I read them, but I remember a fair number of beasties. |

As far as I can tell, John Milius (director of Conan The Barbarian) was working pre production for this but has been booted by WB. Now, the rumor (and it looks like it's just that) is that Robert Rodriguez is set to direct. However, Rodriguez IS something of a maverick and has walked away from a lot of big budget productions in the past so I'd say this is still pretty much up in the air. There is also talk of Xavier Gens (Hitman) and Neil MArshall (Dog Soldiers) as director so who knows. I did find a teaser poster, however
for what that's worth. link |
| Frothers Did It Anyway | 10 May 2008 1:56 p.m. PST |
According to IMDB it's still being written which means it may well get no further. Considering the screenwriter is the same guy who wrote the script for Sahara we REH fans might be better off if this one doesn't get greenlit. |
| Frothers Did It Anyway | 10 May 2008 1:58 p.m. PST |
But that's still no excuse for someone not to make some cool Hyborian minis. |

GW won't even bother with a Conan line. They got LOTR mostly because they used to have the license and also wanted the $ it would bring the company (which they used to buy all the plastics equipment). The other reason they wanted LOTR was simply to keep someone else from getting the license. |
| Tankrider | 10 May 2008 5:15 p.m. PST |
The governator can't even make a cameo? CRRRROOOMMMMM!! |
| jpattern2 | 10 May 2008 5:43 p.m. PST |
Remember all the buzz about LotR in the years before it was releases? How much buzz have you heard for Conan? Any at all, other than here and on other niche sites? Don't get me wrong, I love the entire Hyborian setting. I bought the recent compilations of the original Howard Conan stories, as well as the Kull compilation, and read them all last year. Great stuff. But the general public still thinks of Conan, when it thinks of him at all, as a monosyllabic neanderthal with a sword and an Austrian accent. If the movie is ever released, and if there is an officially licensed Conan miniature line to go with it, I can almost guarantee that it won't be of the quality or depth of GW's LotR line (like it or hate it). |

I think Mongoose Publishing already has dibs on that license. I could be wrong. R. |
| Norscaman | 10 May 2008 8:06 p.m. PST |
I have actually heard tons of buzz about Conan for about 3-4 years now. When the Wachowski (however you spell it) brothers were going to do Iron Crown, there was TONS of buzz. So, yes, I actually think that there will be a new Conan series of movies. They are "relaunching" just like Batman Begins. My guess is that a range of minis will be made in relation to the movie. Ravenscraft, you are right that Mongoose has a license, but the license that the movie company would sell would be based on the movie likeness just like LOTR. With the release of Age of Conan, set to be the largest MMORPG in the world, due out soon, my guess is that chances for the movie and miniatures went up. The one thing that Hollywood suffers from is lack of compelling stories. REH gave us a bunch. If they pick three of them for three movies, I think that a production house would do very well. People will eat it up just like they did for 300 and LOTR if it is well done, well acted, complete with convincing effects, and with merely decent scripts. |
| Knight Templar | 10 May 2008 9:05 p.m. PST |
Cool! I love Conan, REH style of course. The earlier two movies were comic book Conan, which was fun but not REH, were they? Who's playing the eponimous hero? I don't see why Ahnold can't do a bit part at least. Hell, O. J. Simpson back in the day managed a film and football career at the same time. Okay, his football career suffered: but who says Cali even needs a governor? Ahnold could take some time off for a movie and I bet nobody would even notice any difference. |

I have always thought that basils poledouris soundtrack was 50% of the movie succes |
Dr Mathias | 11 May 2008 7:57 a.m. PST |
The soundtrack to the original is stunning. I don't know of anyone today who can blend image and music so completely in the cinema
so I'll be curious to see who they come up with. Heck, I'm still bitter about Conan the Destroyer
I shouldn't even be thinking about this
|
| mweaver | 11 May 2008 10:49 a.m. PST |
But Conan the Destroyer also had a Basil Poledouris soundtrack
so, it has merit. |
| mweaver | 11 May 2008 10:53 a.m. PST |
mathias: "The soundtrack to the original is stunning. I don't know of anyone today who can blend image and music so completely in the cinema
so I'll be curious to see who they come up with. " Me too. I am sitting here listening to Howard Shore's "Complete Recordings" soundtrack of "Fellowship of the Ring" and thinking he might do. One of the good things about BP was that he always seemed to have to perfect music to match the scene (as you said); I think that talent is also one of Shore's great strengths. |
Dr Mathias | 11 May 2008 11:42 a.m. PST |
Interesting
thanks mweaver. I haven't watched Destroyer in so long I guess I didn't realize Basil did that track too. A few weeks ago I even looked at a list of his music
and I somehow missed that. I'll need to watch ( I mean listen) to Destroyer again sometime. Too much talking in that one! |
Germy Bugger | 11 May 2008 12:11 p.m. PST |
I would say Jerry Goldsmith would have been a good choice to do a Conan soundtrack. But sadly Jerry has passed on. His soundtrack to the 13th warrior is superb. The Valhalla track is as good an end battle track as the Battle of the Mounds from Conan. |
Germy Bugger | 11 May 2008 12:13 p.m. PST |
Interesting
thanks mweaver. I haven't watched Destroyer in so long I guess I didn't realize Basil did that track too. In fact I prefer some parts of his soundtrack to Conan the Destroyer. Some of the tracks are a lot neater and the Conan theme comes across better. |

OK, given that Conan isn't cast yet, (and since they haven't asked me to play the part), who would you like to see in the role? I still maintain The Rock would be a fantastic Conan because he can actually act and has great onscreen charisma. However it appears the producers are looking for an unknown so
