Evening all,

We just got the ruleset Brother against Brother instock today to use with the Perry plastics.

At first read through it looks like it could be quite a fun and challenging game.

Two things really… any thoughts on the rules (bad and good points please) and also are there any online scenarios that can be used with the ruleset (the TMP link doesn't work).

Cheers

Phil

BAB is a good system, been using it for years.

Bad points, can be very bloody so provide lots of terrain for the troops. Another bad point IMHO is that no one makes ACW 25mm buildings with lift off roofs except for Miniature Building Authority which are too expensive for me.

Pros, very easy to learn and most importantly fun.

Scenarios, hard to find but there is a book being published soon of ACW skirmish scenarios (it might already be out but I'm not sure).

Join the BAB Yahoo Group and you'll find more help there.

Thanks Craig… i'd forgotten about those…

And thanks Steve i'll have a look at the Yahoo group.

I've played for years, it's a lot of fun, and I like the system, but it doesn't accurately portray unit to unit combat of the ACW very well, really. It's a skirmish-type game and squads of ten guys always seemed somewhat out of place to me.

I'm on the play test group for Warhammer Historicals ACW game and the good news is that my BAB collection works perfectly for both games. Plus it's a terrific system in the making!

I'm with Nazrat on this one. It's a super fun beer and beer game (I don't like pretzels), but don't expect true to life results. Expect a lot of dice rolling and a fun time though! The "Twack" card will always make an appearance right when you need it least.

Have fun!

"Another bad point IMHO is that no one makes ACW 25mm buildings with lift off roofs except for Miniature Building Authority which are too expensive for me."

How is this a bad point about BAB? Do the rules have lots of scenarios that require indoor combat or something? Even so, this being a "bad point about the rules" seems a little subjective and more an issue related to your own gaming budget .

Who asked this joker09 May 2008 2:15 p.m. PST

I played it a couple of times (BAB) and really enjoyed it. The only reason I did not pick it up was that I don't skirmish ACW. Anyone interested in a good, easy to learn sort of game of ACW skirmishing might really like these.

Checkout, as an alternative, GASLIGHT. Yeah, it's VSF but it works really well for ACW. has the same sort of feel as BAB so it is really a matter of what you want in a game mechanic.

Thanks folks, we are going to give it ago tomorrow in the shop. I will, of course, report how we got on.

CraigSpiel09 May 2008 3:51 p.m. PST

Yes, fun game, and it certainly needs loads of terrain! Troops in the open are pretty much done for!

FireZouave09 May 2008 7:09 p.m. PST

It is a very fun game! I like the random card draw. It makes you take risks and sometimes you have to, to get an advantage. Basic points- get to cover as fast as possible, but always take a shot at the enemy when they are in the open. Buildings are a great objective to go for, the cover they give you is so advantageous. I actually have a 25mm resin 2-story stone building kit for sale. It is basically a shell, so you have to add the floors or ledges by the windows for figures. BAB in my opinion is a very fun game, if you have objectives, and yes it does need a little tweaking to make it better, but still a great game!

????????????????

What on earth does that have to do with BaB? frown

We played it some years ago and had a ball with it. I didn't relate to some of the negative comments I saw on the topic shogun quoted and wondered if they were talking about the same ruleset.

We don't lay that lvel of representation any more and Piquet is our game of choice for ACW now.

use cover, otherwise one of the units could be all over in the first turn, I regulary use it a conventions with forty figs per side, and lots of terrain, and I mean lots, rocks bushes trees, fences all give the terrain bonus.

Arty can be lethal also, cav is a little over rated, but can be easily dispatched with accurate musket fire.

Play it and have fun, the rules can easily be picked up in ten mins.

I have a few pics at the bottom of my displaced minis site.

Bluewillow, nice pictures, figures and terrain. Looks like a good time in the making!

BaB is a blast but as my buddies Naz and ROBemis7th pointed out not very historical in flavor but a fun game regardless. We have played it for years and always had a great time. For historical flavor BaB works best for the French and Indian and AWI and the additional rules for that are in the back of the BAB rulebook. BAB makes an excellent convention game for its easy of learning and play.

The forementioned scenario book (Brothers Divided: Scenarios from the Gettysburg Campaign) is well in progress! The layout artists and graphics designer are hard at work…
