Gunfreak09 May 2008 9:33 a.m. PST

I'm from norway and din't get the stimulus packged

ArchiducCharles09 May 2008 9:34 a.m. PST

Now that says a lot you need to move to a third world country, like the US. actually I've heard that Costa Rico is a favorite retirement spot for pensioners. On the other hand when I was in the military getting orders to Europe meant hard times to come financially

RABeery09 May 2008 10:24 a.m. PST

It's far easier to order figures than to actualy paint them.

highlandcatfrog09 May 2008 10:31 a.m. PST

The only problem I see is that you need to order a few more figures.

aercdr09 May 2008 10:42 a.m. PST

Hello Gunfreak.

It's not a problem, it's a calling.

OldGrenadier at work09 May 2008 10:46 a.m. PST

Speak on it, Brother Beery, speak on it!

dafinz09 May 2008 10:58 a.m. PST

Frankly, I don't see what the problem is……..

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2008 11:02 a.m. PST

Yes, you have a problem. Fortunately, I offer the cure! To obtain the cure, send the exact amount you spend on figures to me, in US $. USD You will receive a receipt labeled for therapy services rendered, which (depending on Norwegian laws) may be recoverable as medical expenses. Afterwards, slap yourself on the head and say, "I'll never do that again!"
Voila, you're cured.

I, unfortunately, will remain trapped in the addiction, but it's a sacrifice I am more than willing to make for the good of my fellow man.

Gunfreak09 May 2008 11:08 a.m. PST

"It's far easier to order figures than to actualy paint them"

well I painted about 400 15mm britsh in about 4 months, but thats like 3 months of waiting for more minis

so probebly like a month of pure painting to get it done,

the sad part is that i'm not realy a good painter, so the figs are doomed to look bad so many lead soldiers so badly paint

Steve Hazuka09 May 2008 11:35 a.m. PST

Wow I wish I had that problem. I feel bad when I spend $25.00 USD on figures.

Nikator09 May 2008 11:40 a.m. PST

We all know that, if you are a true gamer, if you evver paint your last unpainted figure, you die immediately. Think of unpainted lead as health insurance!

donlowry09 May 2008 11:45 a.m. PST

Geez, and I agonized for weeks over $90 USD or so for a painting service!

hotleadsnewcomputer09 May 2008 12:13 p.m. PST

Yeah, if you've got that kind of cash to spend on your hobby maybe send some out to a painting service?

But also remember the Red Shadows advice: half decent looking figures on really good terrain look WAAAAY better than excellent looking figures on so-so terrain.

Invest in some good terrain next.

Gunfreak09 May 2008 12:28 p.m. PST

oh yeah forgot used about $1,000 USD on terrain,

mats, trees, houses, roads, rivers, hedgeds, frences, bridgeds ect.

Muncehead09 May 2008 12:49 p.m. PST

britishlinescarlet209 May 2008 1:45 p.m. PST

Where do you find the money?
I agonise over spending £40.00 GBP a month on figures! That said I have two daughters who eat up most of the money I have!

Pete

weissenwolf09 May 2008 1:56 p.m. PST

this may not be a mental health issue…..perhaps….possession, aaarrgggghhh

pbishop1209 May 2008 3:09 p.m. PST

Gunfreak… and I'm complaining at $3.50US for a gallon of gas!!

Regardless, somewhere in the thread someone mentioned if you paint your last figure, you die. I have quite a massive collection of Brit/Allied, French/Allied and Spanish Peninsula Napoleoniccs. On my 4meter x 2meter table, I can accomodte about 1/2 the 28mm figures.

After gaming and collecting for 30 years, I told myself I'm complete with my Brits/Allies and only one more Chasseur cavalry regiment for my French. Spanish could finish as is also.

That said, I still mentally shop, picking up terrain bits or the odd character (general, etc). But, the big BUT, I have 2 units of unpainted figures to ensure I don't die. Don't need them – just don't want to die yet.

Muncehead09 May 2008 3:13 p.m. PST

donlowry – but I have such fun!!! *twitch!!*

I don't know about you being a wargame-aholic, but you seem to be a Napoleanolicaholic.

oldnorthstate09 May 2008 7:48 p.m. PST

One mistake is to invest in Perry's 28mm AWI's when you could have spent less money per figure to go with Sash and Saber 40mm instead.

Stavka09 May 2008 8:42 p.m. PST

"One mistake is to invest in Perry's 28mm AWI's when you could have spent less money per figure to go with Sash and Saber 40mm instead."

I always get a PTSD facial tic whenever I read comments like that. Now I cannot speak for Sash and Sabre, never having had seen or painted one in the "flesh", so I am speaking generally here. But I have learned that a waste of money is when you buy minis that for whatever reason you don't enjoy painting, whatever the initial savings.

No need to mention company names as it is irrelevant- everyone has their own favourite ranges and their own painting style. But I once decided against figures from a particular manufacturer that I really liked due to their cost, and instead I spent a wad on cheaper minis thinking I was doing the right thing.

However, once I turned to painting these, it turns out that I didn't really LIKE the posing and detailing of little guys. Not only that, but there was a lot more flash to be removed that I had expected, and furthermore it was evident that my customary painting style would not really work on them.

Net result- I know I would never enjoy painting them, and thus I wound up not getting around to finishing them. Absolute false economy. I should have gone for the extra outlay up front in the knowledge that I would have enjoyed painting the figures more- and would have actually had painted units to put on the table.

oldnorthstate09 May 2008 9:50 p.m. PST

Now Stavka, try and keep that facial tic under control while I explain this to you…first, Gunfreak has already indicated that he is interested in, dare I mention the manufacturer, Sash and Saber 40mm figures for Napoleonic, so it seemed logical to me that he might also consider the 40mm AWI…and since Sash and Saber are the least expensive 40mm figures, if price is an issue, it was necessary to mention the specific manufacturer.

As far as painting is concerned, I share your opinion that lowest price is not worth it if the figures are a pain to paint. Having painted both Perry 28mm AWI and Napoleonics and Sash and Saber 40mm Napoleonics and AWI, I believe there is little difference in the figures from my painting perspective, so my suggestion does not trade quality for price.

Stavka09 May 2008 10:14 p.m. PST

*Tic! Tic! Tic!*

No worries, I was at pains to say I was talking generally. And if a unit of 40mm S&S stuff wasn't so comparatively heavy (or maybe I'm making a wrong assumption here?) and took up limited storage space I'd go that route in a flash of a priming pan, in my case for their ECW stuff. The dollar being what it is versus the yen they are getting much more competive in price anyway.

Chortle Fezian09 May 2008 11:21 p.m. PST

If someone moves to Norway would they be allowed to bring their car, collection or wargames figures, etc. free of taxes?

If so you could move to somewhere cheaper (preferrably with a painting service) for a few years and then move back to Norway. You might even be able to offset some of your costs by bringing items to sell in Norway.

Gunfreak10 May 2008 7:42 a.m. PST

yeah I doubt there are any regulations about briging in you won stuff over the border, as long as it't not tobaco, alcohol or drugs

BUT I do have to pay 25% on all the stuff I get thought the mail

so if I buy something for £400.00 GBP i'll have to pay a £100.00 GBP just in taxes and £20.00 GBP in extra charged

docdennis196810 May 2008 8:12 a.m. PST

Norway must be a simply wonderful place to live, outside of taxes that amount to James/Younger Gang rates, and the fact that everything seems to cost a Kings Ransom to buy! It must be worth it somehow that we in the USA just don't understand cause we have never been there!!

Anyway keep buying and building at whatever quantity you can afford and prefer, it could be much worse!!

Gunfreak10 May 2008 9:11 a.m. PST

well we do make alot more money then people in most countries so it's not like we have to pay those extreme prices with a $20 USD 000 a year pay slip

also our taxed so pay for things like healthcare ect.

colbert10 May 2008 11:11 a.m. PST

Gunfreak,
There are ways to do away with "TOLL" on the figures your ordering. Jeg måtte aldri betale noe.
Regards,

radmonkey6610 May 2008 11:29 a.m. PST

I doubt Gunfreak is married. If he was, he'd know a thing or two about 'budgeting', aka – the wife gets what she wants [mostly shoes, makeup, dresses and other ebay crap] and I'm stuck with spending $100 USD every six months on books, figures terrain and my stuff.

Wow, I love being married! LOL

Gunfreak10 May 2008 12:38 p.m. PST

no wife, I'm years away of a wife(i'm only 23)

oldnorthstate10 May 2008 5:34 p.m. PST

Enjoy it while you can…

db

Gunfreak11 May 2008 9:20 a.m. PST

well my big problem is that as long as I have something to paint i'm ok, but like now when I'm waiting for figs

I get this urge to just buy and buy and buy

Knight Templar11 May 2008 11:53 a.m. PST

"Years away of a wife". Ha, you had better have wood handy to knock on buddy. In my experience it is the satisfied gamers who tumble like they were ambushed, just when they were smug in their bachelorhood.

fix bayonets11 May 2008 9:43 p.m. PST

Gunfreak,

Maintain the rage brother. I am only now trying to get in metal fig after years of going cheap with plastics due to wife and daughters. The sheilas use the money like water down the drain. Get 'em while you can.

Stephen
