Its the same family as the USMC LAV-25 and US Army's Stryker which both came from the Canadian version of the LAV III.

In theory, that means that the British took a look at the performance of the above vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan and determined that they were successful.

Based on the sheer number of users and variants, I think the MOWAG Piranha will go down in history as one of the most successful AFV designs.

I think you will find the actual order of acquisition to be:
'80s USMC LAV 25
early – mid '90s Canadian Coyote Recce Vehicle, similar to a LAV 25, but can't swim and has a surveillance suite inside.
mid 90's Canadian LAV III
'00 – '5 US Army Stryker

Late 70's Canada replaced their ancient M113s with the 6x6 Piranha vehicles; an IFV with a MG turret and a firesupport/light recce vehicle with the Scorpion turret mounting the 76mm gun. One's called the Cougar and the other called the Grizzly, can't keep them straight. I think there may have been armoured ambulance and SP mortar variants purchased as well.

Well, it'll "cuckoo" on the hour, have a yodelling loudspeaker, woolly seat covers, and have coat hooks for jackets isn't it, at least ……….

The 6x6 Piranha recovery vehicle the Canadians had in the seventies was the Husky.
Grizzly was the infantry 6x6 and Cougar the armoured corp with the 76mm. The the Cougar was supposedly only to be used for training and never to get into combat. (sure)

The Canadians use an 8X8 the Bison as an armoured personel carrier. (no turret)

Forgot. In Canada General Motors had the license to produce the Piranha and it variants.
Once the US Army decided on the Stryker General Dynamics bought out the General Motors Defense Division plant in London Ontario.
