The subject says it all: I am using Delta Ceramcoat colors. What are your recommendations for good base colors for horses? Too many of my horses are turning out to look like they belong on a merry-go-round at the state fair. Please help!

Thanks

I use craft paints, including Delta at times. The problem might be technique rather than paint. Do you dry brush, ink wash or layer the paints? Or do you simply apply one coat? Could you supply a picture so we could offer advice?

there are several good shades of brown that work well for horses. More a reddish brown for some a darker brown for others. Some of our horses are so brown they're black, they're called seal brown.

Vary the colors of browns and blacks, blazes stars and socks with change the monotony of the horses.

What color for a strawberry roan? My horse, Luke, is that color and I am open for suggestions on how to get that effect…

Candy Bar Brown is great, dark burnt sienna, burnt sienna. These all do great horses in brown, Georgia clay works also, but better as a highlight. Grays and whites are easy for me, the browns were always the trouble. Candy Bar is my favorite.

I like Georgia Clay as well! I've a mind to a horse with it and a white mane and tail!! Candy bar also good!!

Charcoal, drybrushed with White, makes a swell Gray.

Autumn Brown – I've used bottles of the stuff, makes a good color for terrain projects as well.

Salutations, gentlefolk,

IMHO, Delta "Spice Brown" #02049 is very good, "Burnt Sienna" #02030 an excellent 'light chestnut'.

Accent 'Country Colors' #2425, "Fingerberry Red" is also very good.

Yours, John Desmond

When you drybrush horses, what size and type of brush do you use?
