Which countries in Asia have the best infantry forces in post-WWII?

Rod Langway08 May 2008 7:22 a.m. PST

Depends on what you mean by "Post-WWII", if you are talking modern day then China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are the most modern trained and equipped militaries in the region.

It also depends what you mean by Asia: do you include, say, India, Turkey or Israel?

and depend on how you mean by "best". Vietcong probably were not the best infantrymen, but really effective…

I mean East Asian. The time period is between 1950-present.

Just kidding.

I mean both regular and irregular forces.

Vietcong – so so. PAVN/NVA the best in East Asia in the 70's. After Tet there was no VC just two different uniforms on PAVN.

They even defeated China in a short war.

South Korea would be next in line for who I would not want to come up against.

Taiwan and Japan have great training and man for man would beat China. Numbers, however, have a quality all their own.

North Korea was a lot better in the 1950-80's – Now they have the role of "The Sick Old Man of Asia".

The problem with all of the above is the lack of current real-war experence. Remember France was considered one of the greatest military powers in the world in 1939.

Queen's Cobra Unit (Thailand) during Vietnam war. One of the few volunteer units which did well. I cannot comment about the current status of the army though.
