(Yes, I know, he isn't technically "driving" it.)

Ahem.

You've probably all seen the Snickers "Get some nuts!" commercial featuring the A-Team's Mr T. If not, you can read about how it was made (and there's a link to the video) here: link

Anyway, I was wondering what tank they used? The article mentions that it was shot in LA. The fuel drums on the back give it a Soviet feel "in general" but the specifics are all wrong.

I wondered if perhaps it was an old Leopard or Patton or somesuch, modified to make it look a bit more up-to-date? A real classic Hollywood mash-up, like the tanks in Battle of the Bulge, or the "Hinds" in many movies including that one about the invasion of the USA whose name escapes me (Wolverines?)?

It's a T-55 with a bunch of crap strapped on. Check the roadwheel spacing and the main gun bore evacuator.

You are thinking of the incredibly awful "Red Dwan", by the way.

"Dawn"

Static Tyrant08 May 2008 3:37 a.m. PST

Thanks Allen, that was fast! I wonder what the "crap" is – particularly those two boxy bits on the front of the turret? They really do a good job of breaking up the turret shape, which I have to admit is about all I normally go on when identifying Soviet stuff. The T55 normally looks so dated…

Here's another T55 with those same boxes on the turret: picture

And a couple looking more "traditional" (with less crap strapped on):

Red Dawn, terrible? Hmm. I thought its portrayal of the atrocities perpetrated on the civilian population was interestingly low-key. Some of its other messages were less subtle.

I hope it was obvious those picture links were more for my benefit, or for any other TMPers who have (had?) slightly more mundane day jobs and are therefore a bit less knowledgeable when it comes to Soviet bloc gear!

Static Tyrant08 May 2008 3:53 a.m. PST

Ah, cool. It's a T55 AM2, which explains the boxes on the turret. They would be the "bra armour"! link

This (1:35?) model is shown at a nice angle, you can make out the turret armour clearly. picture

I suppose someone will be along shortly to ask if QRF makes one. They don't appear to but I'm prepared to be surprised!

…No Mr T figure though…

Static Tyrant08 May 2008 5:42 a.m. PST

Hah!

44 minutes, well, that might be some sort of record. Obviously more TMPers need to place orders with this fine chap to keep him busy!

Achtung Minen08 May 2008 5:46 a.m. PST

"Wolverines!"

soulman08 May 2008 6:29 a.m. PST

Red dawn, one of my top ten films, the hinds in it was so cool

Kampfgruppe Cottrell08 May 2008 6:51 a.m. PST

Red Dawn was awesome and in my top 5. WOLVERINES!

Beowulf Fezian08 May 2008 7:22 a.m. PST

In my opinion, Red Dawn was pretty crappy!

nazrat08 May 2008 10:05 a.m. PST

I feel the same way only doubled and with MUCH more DH-able language involved, but the movie seems to have a lot of fans. More power to 'em.

John the Confused08 May 2008 10:13 a.m. PST

I suspect ones views on the film "Red Dawn" have a great correlation with ones politics.

I will stop know as I have just seen a large arrow sign saying "Dawghouse the way"

John, I think we get the message by now . . . :)

I was wondering about that tank too – Knew it was a pre-1970 Soviet tank but unsure as to details.

Red Dawn was a fun (although silly) movie.
I liked it.
Not a hawkish John Boorman fan, just liked it.

John the Confused08 May 2008 4:00 p.m. PST

Sorry everyone. I was trying to get the spelling right but the delete had not seemed to work.

buckTurgidson08 May 2008 4:12 p.m. PST

I am guessing from the ADA pin that it is a Sgt. York or a Duster! ADA all the way – clear the skies!

Tankrider08 May 2008 5:52 p.m. PST

The Cold War. HAH! You know the Russkies came in 2nd Place when you see us using their old tanks on our candy bar commercials.

Take that, Kruschev!

Whatisitgood4atwork08 May 2008 7:34 p.m. PST

[…No Mr T figure though…]

I pity the fool who tried to make a Mr T figure without a licensing agreement. Though perhaps a Mr T-55 figure would be acceptable…

Etranger09 May 2008 1:55 a.m. PST

Am I alone in thinking that this would make a fine command tank for AK47? Peter Pig might even have a suitable figure.

Covert Walrus11 May 2008 2:47 a.m. PST

What's all this jibberjabber 'bout AK47, fool?

Seriously, a mini of this tank plus all the gypsy caravan decorations is certainly perfectly suited for African campaigns.

LOL

"the hinds in it was so cool"

As already mentioned, they weren't Hinds

Greetings, Frans.

A t-55 with afghan period horseshoe turret armor.

Static Tyrant12 May 2008 2:02 a.m. PST

Oooh, so I actually need some of them to game Soviets in Afghanistan?

Now, they just have be in 1:144 scale or near enough…
