I have a BIG Hoth Battle planned. I would like to find about 50 or so casualties that I could use for Storm Troopers, and Hoth Rebels. Any ideas?

Look for the cheapest commons for both troop types. Clip/heat bend/melt these as casualty bases.

Vojvoda, if you have access to a belt sander, grinder, dremel, etc., or a good jewlers saw or are careful with an exacto (yes, I've put the blade into my thumb bone doing this), literally cut or sand the figure's underside flat.

It helps if you first boil the figure, take him out and immediately flatten him with your hand (wear a glove, use a cloth or just bear the pain for a few seconds) then pour cold water over him. He should stay in whatever pose you formed him in.

Then sanding the underside is easy, so he looks like a casualty, and not a figure dropped on the table.

PM me for a detailed description of the process.

When a figure is killed, remove it from the table (don't forget to mark the spot with a token!), place it on the ground and stomp on it with your heel. Then place the stomped figure back on the table and remove your token.

This works best for Hoth troopers crushed by AT-ATs.

Hexxenhammer, plastic star wars figure would survive that, and harder punishments!

Waaaiiit a minute! James, weren't you supposedly buying all of those star wars minis for your kids ;)

James,

The old Hoth micro toys from the 80s had snowtrooper casualties, and I think rebels as well. The molding isn't crisp by modern standards, and I seem to recall they're a little larger than the current generation of WotC figures, but I think they'd do the trick.

Are you going to be playtesting this in MD, or did the move come through?

Best,

JS

Well James, what have you found and/or decided?

They still are! My oldest son has been playtesting the rules for Hoth and the Attack on the Death Star (64 X wings, and Tie fighters in 20mm)

The Hoth battle is going to be Six AT-AT, 9 AT-ST, 7 tie crawlers, 8 Prob droids, Five Shuttles, 9 speeder bikes, six units of Snow Troopers (12 figures) 9 E-web guns and crew. six units of Storm Troopers of 12 figures, and 6 Hvy Weapons sections. Hoth defenders are six unit of Hoth infantry (11 figures each) six sections of blaster cannons, six units of Rebel troopers with a hvy weapons section each, 7 rebel carts, 12 Atgar guns, 21 Golan Anti-Infantry guns, 18 snowspeeders, 9 Tauntauns, six X-Wings, 8 Rebel transports, and the Millenium Falcon.

The Club Landwehr site has been my primary source for layout but I am looking at doing it on an area about 18 Feet by six feet with extra room on the sides for the snowspeeders to fly around in.

I thought about that but every time I buy a few more Storm Troopers I end up adding another squad to the OOB! I can get tons of Hoth troopers for KIA but I hate to use the storm trooper that way. The cheapest I can find them right now is about a buck a piece. And I like most of the poses so I hate to destroy those figures.

I'd PM you but Bill kicked me out of the club. you can e-mail me at vojvoda13@yahoo.com

Best,

I hope to play test at the club. Kids are going to start school in North Carolina come end of June. I am here in Maryland until end of the year on a current contract. I might relocate at the end of this contract unless it gets extended.

When I saw the title my mind had to go with Episodes 6,1,2 and 3 but then my mind works in strange ways.

Custer7thcav08 May 2008 1:14 p.m. PST

How about scannng the back and front of the figures and then print them onto an avery label (they make full sheet sized ones) and then cut and stick onto thin cardstock. That way you have the effect of a dead body at a fraction of the cost. and you can make lots of them inexpensively.

Just a thought.

Zephyr108 May 2008 2:45 p.m. PST

Or just use ice cubes! (It is Hoth, after all…. ;)

tjantzen09 May 2008 12:02 a.m. PST

I do not know if there might be a copy right violation here….

But I have "killed" a few troopies and made silicon molds out of them.

And then cast them in dental plaster.

Some of the casts I have then altered with green stuff for more variation and then remoulded them.

I am not sure but it might be a copy right grey zone but as long as you do not resell them and do not produce too large quantities. It should be alright

regards
Thomas

Custer7thcav, that's absurd.
It's also an awesome idea, and I'm furious that I never thought of that!

James,

Earth Collectible Toy Mall is where I got a bunch of my casualty figs for my mega Hoth game (400+ square feet) at Origins 2006. They were the old Kenner micro collection stuff, and they had both snowtrooper casualties as well as stormies.

I'm in Sykesville (right outside of Baltimore) – I'd be glad to provide any help I can if you are interested. I still have quite a few AT-STs (WOC) already snow primed as well as 6 AT-ATs and an AT-AT casualty. I sold off most of the terrain after Origins (the project damn near broke me), but some of it is still floating around the area. Take a look over at link for pics – a few pages before and after that one are Hoth, the most recent pics in the gallery are last year's Mos Eisley game…

One other suggestion re: casualties – red felt. 10 cents a sheet at Wal-Mart, you can pull it thin and place it underneath figs you leave on the table. Works great, and is especially visible on a white table…
