Take a look at the lineup that is appearing at Historicon, especially the F&I/SYW speakers. It is great.

I honestly can't remember such a strong lineup of speakers at an HMGSE convention.

WarWizard07 May 2008 6:34 a.m. PST

Yes, that is quite a lineup.

SMPress07 May 2008 6:55 a.m. PST

Yup, great list, however they never release this schedule until after the deadline for GM's to enter their games, so I am almost always running games at the same time as any seminars that I would like to attend. So far, I have been to roughly 13 to 15 Historicons, and have been to 0 seminars…

Some of those photos really need to be brought up to date!

SMPress:

Yes, I've found myself running games at times I wished I could attend a seminar too. Not this time though. I'm going! The times for these speakers seem to cover the clock, which may help too.

Aye Ive been going for almost 10 years and I did my first 3 seminars only last year.

SMPress07 May 2008 9:03 a.m. PST

Well,

I can admit that it is partly my fault. I am running 5 games this year, down from the 7 that I ran the last two years before that, doesn't leave a lot of time to do other things. Before 2006 though, I would normally run only 1 or 2 games, but there were fewer speakers then I suppose…

Maybe next year I wont run any games, and make the seminars and business meeting, but I wont hold my breath. ;-)

A lot of powdered wigs and beauty marks in that lineup.

Well, they are not going to win any prizes in a beauty contest…

You guys looking for a date, or to hear some outstanding military speakers? ;-)

PK Inc07 May 2008 8:14 p.m. PST

I'm amazed every year at the relatively low turnout for the outstanding speakers that HMGS arranges. Its the highlite of the show for me – I try to make it to as many seminars as possible.

And how odd is it that wargamers are making comments about personal appearance???? :)

I would like to go to Historicon this year, however I have to drive from St. Louis and I'm not familiar with the area. Is it easy to find a good hotel/motel? What should I avoid? What should make a point to see? I'm heavily into 1/56th WW2, are there many with similar interests?

historygamer08 May 2008 5:03 a.m. PST

First, make a reservation somewhere now. The Host is long booked. Try the con website as I think it lists other area hotels that are offering a discount if you mention Hcon and HMGSE. Don't wait, as you can always cancel later if need be. The hotels listed are fine.

I'm not exactly familiar with the scale you mentioned, is that 28mm? Lots of games though, about 700 I think, so you should find something.

The area itself is a tourist trap, lots of Amish stuff, some real and model train stuff nearby too. Not far from some of the ACW battlefields as well. If you belong to AAA then get a trip book to see what is along the way.

Has anyone tried "Batailles de l'Ancien Régime", from Old Regime Rules (linked from Bill Protz's bio)? Comparisons to V&B and M&R will help me the most, as those are the two rule sets I'm familiar with.

That is a long list. I attended COL Glantz's Stalingrad "late-night" talk at last year's HISTORICON, and it was very well attended and received. I may have to forsake some gaming to attend some more this year!
