I have just retired in the Philippines and started to catch up on my miniature painting. I have just opened my Old Glory, Dave Alsop, "Limited Edition" French Napoleonics in Shako. I have 2 of infantry and 1 of cavalry. After reviewing the figures I noticed a few have been miscast – without a foot and half a leg. Would you try and repair or just let them hop on one leg and hope nobody notices. If repair – how would you go about doing?

The Steadfast Tin Soldier only had one leg. But I'd try to fix the figures if they were mine.

I'd email OG and request a replacement. I'm sure they will be very glad to help.

If you really want to make a repair it sounds like you are going to have to scratch build part of a leg and a foot. You can do it with "green stuff" or a similar product. To fix the piece to your figure you can "drill and pin" the parts. Drill a hole in each of the parts to be joined and then araldite (or whatever) them together with a single piece of wire in the drill holes. You can buy a hand drill (just a piece of metal with a pin vice at the end) at some hardware stores. I even managed to get them in Bangaldesh so you should be OK in the Philippines.

Hope you are enjoying your retirement. Where are you in PI?

I think I bought these back in the late 1980's or early 1990's and since it was a "limited edition" run the moulds have probably been destroyed. I have a drill and "green stuff" and will try or maybe I should wait until the plastics come out and sacrifice one of their legs. I love it here and very affordable. I live in Angeles City outside of the old Clark Air Base. Brad

I have thought about retiring there myself. Can you offer some advice?

What I did was make a recon for about 2 weeks and checked out the area to see if I could afford. If you are retired military they have 4 or 5 hospitals that are Tri-care. If you have a military disability they have a VA hospital in Manila you can use. If not retired military – the hospital are pretty cheap and medicines are pretty reasonable. You have to remember this is a Third World country and you have to have a positive attitude (lot of corruption but normal for Asia). Lots of nationalities here – U.S., Australians, Germans, Swiss, Koreans, etc.

I have several miscast Citadel figs from when they went to white metal…thought about making peg legs and the like. In the end I just placed them in the back rank.

Skeptic07 May 2008 4:13 a.m. PST

I'd repair them, but you might also hide a few miscasts with suitably-placed long grass, etc.

For repairs, another option might be to buy some new OG Napoleonics with matching legs, and use them for 'leg donations'. They are cheap enough, after all.

I have no idea as to whether they'd agree, but you might also try asking OG for permission to cast a few 'prosthetics' from your good figures.

N.B.: By 'prosthetics' I mean replacements for the miscast legs only.

Thanks for all the help. This is my first post and I am impressed my the quick responses. I have finally got the time to paint my piles of lead – 10 boxes of 25mm Old Glory, Dave Alsop, Civil War miniatures and piles of Dixon Civil War, Frontier FPW, Essex Naps, etc. I also have piles of 15mm Battle Honor, Old Glory and Fantassin Napoleonics. I just recently bought AB 1806 Jena Prussians and AB early French and and army of Eureka Saxons added to the pile. I guess I should do the small stuff first before my eyes go.

Do you have any opponents out there? I heard boondocks is a Tagaglog word.

ultimatewargamer07 May 2008 7:30 p.m. PST

Hi As these figures are opp and hard to find used,I would fix them with green putty.

No opponents hear, just like to paint and put on display. The locals get a kick at seeing my painted Armies – I guess they have never seen this before – get lots of smiles. My wife says bundok means mountain in Tagalog and I have heard there is a village by that name, but do not know which Province. My wife just told me her brother is a very good wood carver and he would carve me some legs – lol.

vtsaogames08 May 2008 1:21 p.m. PST

Wooden legs on French Napoleonic infantry – they should be pirates!

If you get into solo gaming, I suggest Two Hour Wargames rules – you have very little control over your units once the action starts.
