Our local store just got word that W40K is getting yet another core rulebook in early July, along with a supplement book for Apocalypse. And yet, there's no word of it on the GW site that I can see, and no one here's mentioned it. I'm kind of surprised at that. At the very least I would have expected the GW anti-fans to have something to say about yet another edition of the game coming out so soon…most retailers were expecting (or dreading) this in the holiday sales season this year, but July? They didn't even come close to releasing all the codices for 4th edition yet, and here comes the new version.

I need to read Warseer more often, it seems…

streetline06 May 2008 4:20 p.m. PST

There is a preview on youtube. It's stuck up it's own- I mean, it's fully emersed in it's own fluff. ;-)

Pictors Studio06 May 2008 4:20 p.m. PST

So is the new Codex Daemonicus going to work with the new edition? It seems that the tweaks are pretty small these days, heck we are still using the 3rd edition Blood Angels, Tau and Lost and Damned (black crusade or whatever it was) codicies.

I certainly haven't gone out re-buying all the new codicies.

I actually haven't bought the new 4th edition rule book, just got the one that came with Macragge.

streetline06 May 2008 4:54 p.m. PST

I think it's been stated that all army books remain valid for the new editions in both games from now onwards.

How well they work, of course, is another question.

Kilkrazy06 May 2008 4:58 p.m. PST

The US and UK official websites have a countdown to the release of 5th edition on July 12th (?)

Kilkrazy06 May 2008 5:02 p.m. PST

Regardless of the state of the codexes, GW are bound to sell tons of 5th edition.

There are still several armies (notably IG and Dark Eldar) stuck with 3rd edition codexes -- presumably these will be the first to be upgraded after SMs.

It's also considered that the recent Ork and Daemon codexes were written to be compatible with 5th edition.

Consequently the Tau will probably be the oldest codex in about 2 years and as it's a popular army a new release with some new models would be a good move.

GypsyComet06 May 2008 6:29 p.m. PST

Blood Angels got a White Dwarf/PDF update less than a year ago, and are rumored to be on the short list for 5th ed Codices.

nvdoyle06 May 2008 7:28 p.m. PST

Not caring a whit about new 40K rules, I'm always up for more Tau models! grin

lugal hdan06 May 2008 7:28 p.m. PST

If the rumors are to be believed, the starter box will set a new standard for tons of figures for a decent price. Of course, they'll likely raise the price of everything else to compensate. :-)

Still, you have to admit that the GW starter boxes are good deals, if you like the figures.

Rogzombie Fezian06 May 2008 7:46 p.m. PST

The Dark Eldar codex is updated as well, unless the 2nd ed is also out of date, but I think its okay.

The last box set was great, all those tyranids! Better looking space marines, though would be nice. They still look 15 years old.
I guess talking about its too late, I'm sure they are in the boxes already…

Pat Ripley Fezian06 May 2008 8:19 p.m. PST

the latest white dwarf (australia) has a double page picture with space marines and necrons so maybe they will be in the box

Baconfat06 May 2008 8:20 p.m. PST

Bols says marines and orks, blah.

Shooty IG armies are dead, no shooting through any friendly troops. Gone are my ridiculous heavy gun lines. IG flashlights are even more useless.

You'll have to a close combat army to win. Like WFB without magic or bows.

XianXXY06 May 2008 9:05 p.m. PST

From what I've heard from friends at GW (maybe reliable-maybe not) the new edition will make the old codices obsolete.

But…..

GW is doing this in response to the numerous complaints about rules problems, codices not being made for all races, codex creep etc. and may other reasons that have been obsessively complained about by players.

SO, while your old book swill not be usable (by GW definitions) they are going to roll out Codices for all the races early on when 5th ed is released so you won't have to wait long for your codex.

But…

Mostly GW can now re-charge you for books you already own by tweaking the rules slightly and saying the old books are not compatible.

Not sure how true this info is, but it is consistent with GW's sales practices so far.

Ivan DBA06 May 2008 9:17 p.m. PST

I'm looking forward to picking up 4th edition on the cheap finally…

wolvermonkey06 May 2008 9:33 p.m. PST

Man, and I just got the Macragge rulebook in the mail. Well, frak them,I'm just going to use the one I got for now.If they do a mini version of 5th ed like the Macragge book then I'll bite. But I don't want or need all the other fluff they put in the big $50 USD book.I just wanted the rules.

Steve Flanagan07 May 2008 2:27 a.m. PST

Is it just me, or is the UK GW website updated much less often these days?

avidgamer07 May 2008 4:10 a.m. PST

The US website is updated less as well. It used to be the opposite.

Kilkrazy07 May 2008 6:10 a.m. PST

Since they closed the community forums they probably get a lot fewer visitors.

Agent Smith07 May 2008 6:51 a.m. PST

Who needs a 5th Edition, stick with the original and the best Rogue Trader.

I switched back to this last year, because I realised how bland games and armies were under 4th edition. Boring!

I have tweaked RT a bit and have limited Psychic powers to Level 2, unless an uber-character is playing.

I am currently looking at swapping out Toughness and Armour Saves for an Armour Value like the modern vehicle rules. My vehicles have an AV but also have damage points.

As for the Codex creep, now I can do what I damn well want LOL!

Anybody know anything about the new rules themselves? There was talk on TMP a while back saying it would get back to a 1st/2nd edition mindset. That would get me back in, as I despised the complete rewrite starting with 3rd, haven't played anything but 1st/2nd house rules since.

I really hate thats its just more kiddyhammer and real problems arent addressed. (table size, terrain, ect)

Darby E07 May 2008 7:29 a.m. PST

I've given up on GW, and especailly 40k. It just isn't stable, and oh so bland. Luckily there are other money pits that I have discovered to toss my financial well-being into.

…and I've had much more fun playing the Dawn Of War series on computer…

Agent Smith07 May 2008 8:08 a.m. PST

"Is it just me, or is the UK GW website updated much less often these days?"

Yes it is, and is this a case of no news is good news.

White Dwarf – Utter Pants
Black Gobbo – Pants
GW Website – Pants

My 2 pence worth, sorry for the rant!

Rothgar07 May 2008 10:35 a.m. PST

That's ashame about the IG. I have a massive amount of bare metal Tallarn IG I was hoping to sell off. I wonder if I can trade the metal in for credit instead.

CmdrKiley07 May 2008 12:29 p.m. PST

Good thing I never spent any money on 4th Edition. Hell I was getting dis-illusioned with 40k when the 3rd edition rules seemed to be updated with every other issue of White Dwarf.

Ron W DuBray07 May 2008 5:36 p.m. PST

take all your GW minis and get a very good rules set for free
called NO Limits
66.135.36.5/nolimits/index.html
a lot more fun to play and you can use any minis you want in your force, and be as shootie or a close combat as you want.

Rothgar, I would like some Tallarn. Put them up for sale. If they are cheap enough I'll buy.
And maybe I can sell off my old books to someone.

SeattleGamer Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2008 6:23 p.m. PST

From all the rumors I've read, it sounds like 5th edition is a major revamping of the rules, not just a few minor tweaks.

Vehicles get more deadly, but also become more vulnerable (just one damage table now). They can only target one enemy – not multiple targets. Number of weapons you can fire depends on if you didn't move, moved a limited distance, or moved a lot.

LOS is blocked by units not figure, so no more pesky tracing LOS between models. However, you can shoot over things if you are on higher ground, and large monsters and vehicles can still be picked out.

Infantry will probably last a little longer now (more cover, including the ability to "become pinned" instead of (or at least to partially offset) taking casualties. It's called "Get Down!"

Infantry are less likely to get killed if they were hit while in a transport of some sort.

There are long lists of various rumors out there, but they are just rumors. Still, if they are even half right, 5th edition is more than just a few tweaks.

"They can only target one enemy – not multiple targets. Number of weapons you can fire depends on if you didn't move, moved a limited distance, or moved a lot."

Gee, THAT'S intuitive. baloney baloney baloney

Nothing wrong with 2nd ed. vehicle rules. How the hell do multiple fire arcs slow the game down any, if you're not an idiot? If the portside sponson gunner can't see what the oter sees, why can't he fire on what he CAN see? What else does he have to do, anyway?

Kilkrazy08 May 2008 7:17 a.m. PST

I would call it a minor revamling with some major tweaks.

There are no fundamental changes to the game system, such as changing the turn sequence or the statline, but there are a lot of modifications to existing rules.

According to rumour.

Rothgar08 May 2008 8:00 a.m. PST

Castellan,

email me if you are interested, otherwise I'll put them up on the marketplace. imgnomish1(at)yahoo(dot)com.

I've grown very tired of 40K and GW in general. Skirmish level is everywhere. My tastes have chanced to more historical stuff too. I'd rather do some Iron Ivan skirmish.

infojunky08 May 2008 1:10 p.m. PST

I am having a problem caring about a new edition.

they have systematically removed any and all reasons I would buy any of their product.

With the reduction of bits and sprues to whole boxes or pre-approved sets has removed any chance that I will be tempted to purchase for a bad model idea, much less army building.

SeattleGamer Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2008 1:43 p.m. PST

The Beast … remember, this is all speculation and rumor. Whoever is posting this info may be playtesting and posting after games, but the final version of the rules could be different.

I will buy the boxed set to get the mini rulebook. While I have both Space marines and Orks, I don't really need more minis. I might keep the Deth Koptas, and then sell the rest for more money than I paid for the boxed set, thus getting the rules and a few minis for free.

I am not excited about a new version of the rules however. I play 40K on occasion, but it was never my main field of interest (prefer fantasy battles to sci-fi).

I really enjoy sci-fi skirmish type games (individually named figures, small bands of survivors in a post-apoc word setting, or gangs fighting turf wars, etc). But that's a far cry from 40K.

ScottWashburn Sponsoring Member of TMP12 May 2008 12:17 p.m. PST

I haven't played 40K since 2nd edition. Looked over 3rd edition and decided I didn't like it. Never even looked at 4th edition. But I'm hearing some things that indicate that 5th edition might be a bit closer to 2nd edition and that might get me to take a look. And there is a magical 'ring' to "5th Edition". The Old WRG ancient games reached their pinnacle with 5th Edition and I recall them fondly. Of course WGR 5th Edition was also the LAST version of those rules that was actually playable…
