386, to be precise.

I finished painting my Warmaster BoFA goblin army last night (all but the shaman and the general, so technically I have four goblins left).

Yeah, they're 10mm, and yeah, they're on strips, but still that's a lot of little green heads to paint. 8-o.

But I'm done!

On to the elves, dwarves and men… 8-O

Do you feel blind?

Make sure to rank them all up, it's very satisfying.

Are you sure they don't need a bit more highlighting?

You know Tolkein's orcs weren't green, I take it? ;-)

Dave Crowell06 May 2008 7:56 a.m. PST

Did you paint their beady little eyes?

Pictures? That must look great en masse.

There were moments when I lost my depth perception when trying to do touch up work. (People who put recessed details on 10mm figures are sadists.)

Yeah, I know. Tolkien's orcs aren't green. But I'd already painted my Warmaster metals in traditional RPG orc green, so I painted the BoFA goblins to match. (Heck, they're green in the rule book anyway.)

I have them snapped into their bases, though not yet flocked, and they *do* look good ranked up en masse. (Did I mention I also painted 74 wargs as part of this? Fortunately, that consisted of spray black, dry brush grey. I leave the fancy muzzle stuff for others to go blind doing.)

I'll try to put up some pictures in the future, but don't hold your breath on that!

I tried painting those 6mm Baccus and I was going crosseyed.

Parzival, I painted exactly half of the goblin infantry of the Bofa box a year ago and got burnt out. I haven't retake the task since then.
You're a hero and yes, the sculptor is a saddist!

The key for me is two-fold:

1. Stick with basic colors in blocks: green, red, brown, black, "gunmetal" and bronze.

2. Create some variety in the strips to reduce tedium; I did this by randomly varying the shield colors on a strip (and among the strips) from black, red and dark brown, then by varying the weapons, helmets and shield strips between gunmetal and bronze. It helps break the monotony of the paint job, creates a more visually interesting army, and fits my perceived notion of goblins as arming themselves with both found (uh, stolen) materials and their own crafted ones.

Other things I learned:

DON'T to a quick and fast dry brush of goblin green first. It seems speedy, but you quickly discover there's a lot of green to cover up later. :-P Be a little more precise on the front end, and there are less headaches down the road. (Learned this the hard way.)

Plastics can mold badly. This happened with a few strips (3 or 4, tops). Fortunately, if the front was a mess, the back of the strip was good, and vice versa. So I was able to base the strips accordingly, hiding the worst sides towards the middle of the stand.

Avoid a lot of brown; you wind up with muddy looking stands. (I was originally planning to make the shields all brown, but the monochromatic effect of it was horrible.)

Lastly, just sit down and paint. That's what got me through it.

*Whew!*
