When I first started gaming/painting back in the early 90s I was a little all over the place. My first love has always been ACW. But I bought and painted fantasy, some 40k, some Napoleonic's some WW2, you get the point. I had lots of stuff but not enough of one thing to do anything with it.

I forced some discipline on myself about ten years ago and settled on one scale 15mm, and one period ACW. I have to say that it worked for me. Are any of you one period gamers?

vtsaogames05 May 2008 6:29 p.m. PST

One period that starts about 200 BC and ends in 1945 AD. Very disciplined, I am.

Pictors Studio05 May 2008 6:46 p.m. PST

I'm not quite as disciplined as vtsaogames. My period starts around 600 BC and ends around 40,000 or so AD.

Brent2751105 May 2008 6:46 p.m. PST

Im with vtsao….

2000BC to 1945.
WRG rules cover this single period quite well.

Paul Y05 May 2008 6:52 p.m. PST

Yep. The Pointy Stick (TM) period. Admittedly some of the pointy sticks involved go 'bang' as well ;)

altfritz05 May 2008 6:54 p.m. PST

No. A few years ago I tried to narrow it down to a few periods. I soon expanded the half-dozen I had initially thought of to ten.

Well, needless to say, ten as a limit didn't last too long.

Now I don't bother setting limits.

Steve Hazuka05 May 2008 7:03 p.m. PST

Right now I'm a single era gamer. 15mm Fantasy, until I order those zombies next month.

altfritz05 May 2008 7:14 p.m. PST

Is being a "one period gamer" the same as being a "one woman man"?

nate716305 May 2008 7:16 p.m. PST

Probably so as I have been married for the same period of time

Kampfgruppe Cottrell05 May 2008 7:25 p.m. PST

40s only for me except for when playing Tyranid attack but other then that it's WWII for all my horror, sci-fi, historical and pulp gaming.

leidang05 May 2008 7:45 p.m. PST

I run from a Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far away to 40,000k with just about everything in between. I've also been contemplating some of the Lucifer wars figs and doing a revolt of the angels game so that may expand my time period further.

Stosstruppen05 May 2008 7:47 p.m. PST

Its easier to be with one woman than to game only one period…I land somewhere between vtsao and pictors

coopman05 May 2008 7:55 p.m. PST

Yes, one period: Ancients to Modern.

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian05 May 2008 8:25 p.m. PST

Compared to others I'm almost disciplined. I only have 2mm, 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 1/600, 1/1200, 1/2400. 1/6000 and call it 1/39000 spaceships for Ancients through Spaceships.

Fred Ehlers05 May 2008 8:53 p.m. PST

Two periods: ACW and Zulus, Oh wait, I have some medievals too. So three. no I have some sci fi Aliens make that 4

Oh never mind. No got lots.

jawjatek05 May 2008 9:04 p.m. PST

ACW is my only period. Although, I think I'd like to branch into AWI someday.

Holy Roman Emperor Joseph III Fezian05 May 2008 9:08 p.m. PST

I have only ever known one single period gamer, and he gamed Gw's Lord of the Rings.

I finally got him to play a gangster game with me… using the LOTOW west rules.

Black Cavalier05 May 2008 9:11 p.m. PST

We're allowed to stick to one period? Dang, I wish I'd known that.

jawjatek05 May 2008 9:52 p.m. PST

Now, I'll play just about anything on the tabletop, but I have too many other hobbies vying for funds to sink too much into more than one period and do any of them justice. I just can't afford all of my interests, so I just stick with my favorite. Being from Georgia, I can walk the battlefields, see the actual ground my ancestors fought over, and even dig miniballs out of my own backyard. It's easy for me to find the ACW more tangible than other conflicts.

Patrick R05 May 2008 11:01 p.m. PST

I tried to stick to one, but it didn't work out. Now I have three : "History", "Fantasy", "Science Fiction"

darthfozzywig05 May 2008 11:31 p.m. PST

The other day, a close friend said he needed to get me a large wheel with two independently revolving rings, the inner labeled "American Civil War, Napoleonics, WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Modern, Near Future Sci-Fi, Fantasy" and the outer one labeled "Miniatures, Roleplaying, Books, Movies." Then I could just set the dials to whatever was appropriate at the time.

Said it would be easier for my wife and friends to keep track of what I was interested in/working on. ;)

"Are any of you one period gamers? "

No.

I do have a preference for the twentieth century though, WW2 in particular.

I game anything from Biblical stuff right through to Star Wars etc though.

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP06 May 2008 2:40 a.m. PST

This is like asking

"When did you stop beating your wife"

You have to lie whatever answer you give and no-one believes you anyway.

WarWizard06 May 2008 3:52 a.m. PST

I tried to avoid any 20th Century conflicts. But now with all the great war stuff I go from New KingDom Egyptians to 1918.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP06 May 2008 5:27 a.m. PST

My wife would certainly like it if I stuck to one conflict

I also started with ACW and that is still my largest army (well, especially since I have both Rebs and Yanks). It is also the only period that I have armies in 6 mm, 15 mm(largest one) and 25/28 mm. I also have 6 mm Napoleanics, 28 mm Ancients, 28 mm ECW, 28 mm Medieval, 28 mm Sci-Fi (Warhammer 40K Guard, forgive me), 28 mm Seven Years War (my current craze – this comes and goes), 28 mm Colonial, 6 mm WWII and, latest thing, 28 mm WWI/Interwar

Ceterman06 May 2008 6:13 a.m. PST

Apparently, nate7163, YOU are the only one period gamer in the world. Damn, must be lonely there… :)

ArchiducCharles06 May 2008 6:14 a.m. PST

I've only painted Napoleonics for the last three years, so yeah, I'm currently a one period gamer, and I have too many Nappys figures to paint for this to change in the short term.

Although I have to resist the urge to try ACW…those damn Perrys!

ArchiducCharles06 May 2008 6:16 a.m. PST

Nope, you're not alone nate! wink

Old Slow Trot06 May 2008 6:35 a.m. PST

Ancients,ACW,Fighting Sail,Napoleonics,WW1 air, skirmishers, moderns…no single exclusive period, though I have been focusing more on WW1 air combat lately.

nate716306 May 2008 7:09 a.m. PST

No I see that I am not alone. It is hard to stay focused. I am often pulled to one period or another. But after I read and do some research I begin to realize that amount of time, money and effort involved. I am really just too lazy!

I am drawn right now to a little VSF, but I can use what I already have. I always seem to run into people that are not willing to come halfway. That is really sad. I would never close myself off to a period or system. But I know myself and budget.

The good thing about it is the size of the collection I have been able to amass. Whenever I get some extra money I remind myself that I have something special collection wise and after some angst I buy limbers, wagons, houses or trees. The bad aspect is that it is hard to find someone within a reasonable driving distance who wants to game the period.

There are days, however, that the draw of VSF and an invasion of Mexico around 1868 is far too hard to overcome.

Big Red06 May 2008 7:20 a.m. PST

I've narrowed it down to 10 periods and I'm sticking to them – mostly.

docdennis196806 May 2008 7:42 a.m. PST

One period at a time! Buy it, build it, play a little, then sell it all. Then do something else or actully redo what I just sold off. Crazy but true. Did have ACW 25mm, ECW 25mm, and LOTR 25mm at one time once, but all to Ebay eventully. Now have some 28mm SYW for BAR. Am I a "serial collector" or something worse?? Likely yes!

Dave Crowell06 May 2008 7:45 a.m. PST

Yes! Absolutely. One period at a time on my gaming table. I'm a one ruleset gamer too.

Footslogger06 May 2008 8:22 a.m. PST

I only have a few active periods at any one time. The rest get stuck in the loft until I get bored and start wondering why I ever put them away.

Only three times in my life have I parted with figures. I dread to think what will happen when I retire and HAVE to shrink down to a smaller house.

nate716306 May 2008 9:00 a.m. PST

"what will happen when I retire and HAVE to shrink down to a smaller house."

Just buy one with an enormous garage!

chronoglide06 May 2008 12:38 p.m. PST

regular as clockwork, once a month…..
the inner child has read all the above posts and is still sniggering….periods…..

Scott Mingus06 May 2008 1:58 p.m. PST

Predominantly 15mm ACW, although I do occasionally foray into 15mm AWI and 15mm Plains Indians.

ArchiducCharles06 May 2008 2:01 p.m. PST

OK, the new Perry plastics just made it official; I'm not getting away from Napoleonics for a long, long time!

nate716306 May 2008 2:36 p.m. PST

you and many others are doomed, ArchiducCharles, doomed!

nathan

Nick Nascati06 May 2008 3:15 p.m. PST

I wish I could be, but the last movie/tv special, or the last book…

Chthoniid06 May 2008 10:05 p.m. PST

I just do medieval wargaming, mostly set in or around the Near East, in 15mm. WW2 and ACW have been abandoned for a long time.

Even then, wargaming has become a rather moribund hobby. I've got fairly involved in anti-poaching work with Pantheris tigris, and tend to disappear for periods at a time…

Trajanus07 May 2008 2:45 a.m. PST

One Period Gamer?

Wish I was. I'd have saved a fortune and might have actually finished painting by now!

ArchiducCharles07 May 2008 6:41 a.m. PST

I know, I know, I'm doomed. And so is my wallet!

Gunfreak07 May 2008 6:48 a.m. PST

I was a one period man for about 3 months, before I started spreading out.

BUT I have made a solemn vow not to go away from the horse and musket era. with the ACW beeing the most modern war i'm going to do, it will be intresting to see if I can keep my promise

DS615107 May 2008 8:52 a.m. PST

No, no I'm not a one period gamer. We even game some periods in diffrent scales.

If you only play one thing, then you're missing out on all the other things!

crhkrebs08 May 2008 9:37 a.m. PST

If you only play one thing, then you're missing out on all the other things!

Ya, that's what I say to myself too. What intelligent, well read, interested individual wants to be confined to just one period? Ya, that's right. That's how I justify my purchases.

The sad reality is that I also have Wargamers ADD too.

I've been trying to pare down my collection to a couple of periods: mid 18th Century (WAS & SYW) and Late Romans, both in 28mm.

I also have a few Napoleonics left after selling this collection off, some ECW ( a small brigade to use in a friend's set up), Vikings & Saxons ( I may sell this one) and ACW (huge collection that I may sell as well). AmRev War was also sold off.

If I am successful in paring things back to the 18th Century, there are still a lot of different armies and wars that I can branch out into. So this project could keep me going for the rest of my playing days.

brevior est vita08 May 2008 11:54 a.m. PST

Yes… one scale (15mm) and one period (Rome and enemies during the late Republic).

Cheers,
Scott

Greyalexis09 May 2008 4:48 p.m. PST

I play just one period, human, I refuse to play neatherdal wars, regardless of what spokesmen for Geico say.
