I keep fighting it, but I love the look of the Conquest miniatures too much. If I was game French and Indian War. What would I need. Terrain, Figures, Rules, give me some ideas.

Lots of trees.

For rules, I quite like these: link

General Montcalm04 May 2008 2:51 p.m. PST

If you just want a skirmish game, then you can do some very enjoyable ones with a dozen figures a side, some tree, rocks, a log cabin and a water feature to start off with.

Start small, make each figure a character. For the French, of the twelve figures i'd do 3 mission indians, 3 savage indians, 3 militia or courier des bois and 3 French Marines, one of whom is an officer. A scouting party.

For the British / Americans, it depends where you want to start, you could do an American colonial force, 4 provincial regiment soldiers – The Virginia Blues would be good for this, an officer and an old grizzled trapper guide. Then suppliment them with 6 local militia, civilians with muskets basically.

Then as you expand things you can bring into the games more Indians, French militia dn Marines, and of course the Regulars. Then for the Brits a selection of small units of Regulars, Scots, Marines, Greandiers, Light infantry, Gages and the Ranger battalions – Rogers, Gorhams etc. Some artillery always looks good, though rarely useful in battle.

Depending how far you go you could expand on and bring in other American coloial provincial regiments such as Massachusets men (brown coats), New Jersey Blues, New York drabbers, etc. Plus civilians – women – children – men, and an Indian encampment.

At some stage you are going to want to construct a simple colonial log fort. Watercraft – canoes, batteaux, rafts, even a sloop : )

Beware, once you start there is no stopping – my 15mm collection is huge : )

Hey General Montcalm, do your Compagnies Franches de la Marine have flags? If so where did you get them from?

This is one of the easiset periods to get started in.

Start with a cabin and some settlers (6-12). Getting a donze Indians or two, some rocks, some tress, and yopu are off and running.

I am using the Bachman O-Scale cabin, with modifications, for my Redoubt figures. I modified it so it has a base, and the roof lifts off. You can get one at a train shop for about 10 dollars. Might be a bit large if you are using Old Glory 25mm, but works well with Redoubt.

Then as General Montclam said above you can start expanding by adding more forces.

What movies have you seen?

Depending on whether it's "Last of the Mohicans" or "Northwest Passage", that should determine your initial purchases.

One of the tricks will be to post the query to the right board – for instance you might get a better response on, say, the 18th Century Board rather than than a Napoleonic Board. The French & Indian War was over before Napoleon was even born.

Just a thought.

Hi

First, understand that I use my own rules…HOWEVER, I recommend the canadian wargame group rules "Habitats and Highlanders" for a start.

It has rules for skirmishing and battlefield with the same figs, has a campaign system, a brief canadian oriented version of the war, a lovely painting guide. Essentially a "one stop shop" for getting into the era. It allows you to easily game and buy figs and ease into changing things to your own prefrences.
