I started getting into 25mm/28mm gaming a few years back, and as the Swiss were always a favourite of mine two of my early purchases were a Foundry Swiss Horde and an Essex Swiss army pack. Other projects kept getting in the way (as they do), but the Swiss have finally worked their way to the top of the queue. Anyway, I bought myself an Old Glory Army membership a month ago, and amongst other things bought a pack of Swiss pikemen and some mounted crossbowmen, just to round things off. Well! For starters, they were very compatible, size-wise, with the other figure-makes already in the army. They were nice, clean sculpts, with a bare minimum of filing necessary. OK, I had to drill the hands out, but in the scheme of things that was a mild hiccup. Finally, for something like 65 cents a figure (Aust), or about a quarter the price of the Foundry figures, they were amazing value. I just wish I had done a bit more research way back then :P. Cheers Paul. |

I agree – the OG Swiss are very nice. Its nice to see a post where OG isn't bashed for 1) its poses, or 2) big bags of figures. I love OG
I have a lot of their figures. There are some odd poses every once in a while, but take a look around the next game convention you're at
.there are a lot of odd looking gamers too! I haven't seen many gamers that look like Perry or Foundry figures! I must be in the very small minority. Perry and Foundry are nice, but they don't set my heart racing, nor have I bought more plastic ACW figures than I'll ever need just because they're Perry sculpts. I don't choose OG because of their low cost, I prefer their packaging and the variety of poses. That, plus their fantastic customer service, makes it very easy for me to prefer OG. Brent |

Paul Y Hi , i just scored aboput 100 of "Essex" Swiss pikemen amongst some other early renaisance figures , and although not the best figures they will certainly be used in the massive pike blocks i plan , but i'd like more figures from another manufacturer to mix in especally for the units i havent got yet. In your post you mention 0.65 cents (AUST) for OG , so i'm assuming you're local , may i ask where you got them from and if there are any pictures online . I am planning on starting a Condottieri army and also need mounted Xbows so any assistance is greatly appreciated . I'm also an OG fan , i used allot of thier figures in an EIR army and a Late Roman army , i was quite pleased with all of them but back then you could buy them off the shelf here and see what youre getting . As PK Inc says , the OG stuff is quite good , there are only a few of thier figures that look odd , most look fine and in masse pike formations they all blend together into a big prickle anyway . Any help is appreciated , cheers tom , ( Melb ) |

You can see some painted OG Swiss pikemen here: link They look really good and I have been twitching for a long time too! |

I find drilling the hands to hold spears to be a plus, not a hiccup. The shaft stays in place unlike the open handed grips of other manufactureres. |

Imperial Forge, Nice pics and what a great idea for an army. Where did you get the info for the flags/colours etc? Cheers Stuart |

Tom ThaBear – I was going on the price of Old Glory figures after applying the 40% discount, ie about 20 dollars Aust for 30 figures. It would actually work out a little more (forgot to figure in postage costs and the cost of the OG Army membership in the first place). Two things though; the USPS Flat Rate priority box would have to be one of the best inventions since sliced bread ($42 for up to 20 pounds of figures!) – and secondly it doesn't take much to make your money back with the discount (especially with the way the exchange rate is now). Imperial Forge – lovely painting! CapnJak – I didn't think of it like that
you are absolutely right of course :). Those pikes aren't going anywhere! Cheers Paul. |

Hi All, I was just going to chime in on the figures, but I see Imperial Forge has provided a link to my army – thanks for the compliments evryone! Stuart, to answer your question, I found this great Civil Heraldry site out of the Netherlands: ngw.nl To make the flags, I printed the designs as a template on paper (a wrap around of the normal and reverse images), painted over them, then glued them together with white glue and shaped them as the glue dried. After that, just touch up painting. Chris |

Oops
sorry Chris, I didn't read the text to see who had actually painted them – too busy admiring the brushwork. Lovely work! |

No Problem Paul – I'm just glad people like them. If you're looking for other figures to throw into the mix, many of the Mirliton fantasy figures will also work with OG: link I also just bought some Crusader crossbowmen and though slightly taller and thinner than the OG figures, I think they are going to mix in ok once painted up. The Front Rank War of the Roses figures I've used are nice as well, but they are larger than the OG figures and I wouldn't mix them in the same unit. Chris |

Thanks Chris. You are spot on about the Mirliton/Grenadier figures; I scored a mixed bag of 35 or so of their medievals on Ebay a couple of months ago and they are absolute gems. Most of them will find service with my HYW/WotR English, but there were 10 halberdiers who will fit in very well with the Swiss. Detail, proportions and animation are all great, and very reasonably priced by Mirliton as well. If the army expands, I daresay I will grab a few more (along with the OG figures of course ;) Cheers Paul. |
