CHESTER, Va. (May 2) – Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.

Sam White's Feb. 18 death shook the close-knit fraternity of relic collectors. Experts say it's extremely rare for a Civil War cannonball to detonate. Brenda White said she believes the cannonball had a manufacturing defect. "There was absolutely nothing he had done wrong," she said....

Don't you love media types that know nothing about what they are covering? "digging up rusting bullets" Bullets don't rust, they're made of lead.

As for the story, he was well known locally as someone who knew what he was doing. It's a loss to all collectors.

Except for that whole "don't pick up UXO" thingie.

If it explodes, isn't it a shell, and not a cannonball? And, how is the earth really "battle-scarred" 140 years later?

Furtherproof that media types are mostly a bunch of ignorant hacks. The lot who call ANYTHING that even vaguely resembles an assault rifle an "AK-47".

Sort of, lead does oxidize. Unoxidized lead is very bright and shiney, not unlike silver. Lead oxidizes fairly rapidly. Rust is the common phrase for oxidation of certain materials. In some sense you are both correct.
