I am wondering what some of the "Lowland" regiments in the Jacobite army in the Forty Five would have worn? The Atholl Brigade, the Ogilvy regiment and a couple of others etc.

I realize that there was no "uniform" appearance to the men, i.e. they were not all wearing the same color jacket or breeches. Did the Lowland regiments primarily wear breeches or trews, instead of the belted plaid of the Highland regiments?

Also, which units were considered to be "Lowland" regiments?

Lowland infantry mostly wore normal civilian clothes--i.e normal trews and coats with maybe a plaid over the shoulder, but they did generally wear the blue bonnet..
The Athole Brigade was part of the Lowland Division but was actually a Highland unit, being present at Prestonpans, Falkirk and Culloden but was only in action at Culloden where it was pretty much destroyed..
Many units had 'Lowland' companies in them but as far as I know only the Manchester regiment(poor sods), John Roy Stewarts raised in Edinburgh and a few others could be classed as Lowland..

Based on the clothes from bodies dug up from the peat (which weren't necessarily Jacobites from the '45), I seem to recall typical 18th century civilian attire: breaches, stockings, jackets, etc. I think they were mostly grays & brown, but maybe the peat added those shades. I would imagine that they wore those type clothes plus the bonnet.

Basically you would have a similar look to the Covenanters only more modern. Grays, browns, blues, etc. with a light blue bonnet. Most would have plaids as with SCW troops, but not all would be tartan. I know there were some units from the North-East – Bannerman's Bttn. from Aberdeen for one; can look up some more for you (just can't remember them off the top of my head as it's been a very long time since I thought about this stuff). Remember that not even all the "Highlanders" were Highland by this time – certainly not a la Braveheart!

Not to forget, many of the officers would have been very dandified -- toff-about-town mixed with highland get up.
