I have recently got hold of some old glory hoplites and some of the models appear to be wearning a cone shape brimmed hat- is this a hat of a helmet???? |

Probably a pilos helmet. It was a bronze version of a hat. Apparently popular with Sparta and those who wished to imitate it. |

Also according to Snodgrass the Athenian arrows at Sphacteria easily pierced the Spartan piloi. He argues that although the pilos was the official bronze helmet of the Spartans during the Peloponnesian Wars, they may have worn the felt cap as a helmet liner, or sometimes even in battle if they were caught off guard. |

I have some hoplite figures with that sort of hat, hate it, might be historical but I would have preferred the figs to have the usual hoplite helmet. |

If it is cone shaped with a brim, it is probably not a pilos, as they don't have a brim. There is a Graeco/talian helmet that is a brimmed cone; can't recall the name, though. Personally I love pilos; so much easier to paint! :-) Simon |

The Boetian helmet looks a lot like a big brimmed sun hat, but has 2 distinct creases on each side. It was much favored by the Greek cavalry, but there is a chance that a hoplite might have one, at least from one of the 'fringe' cities. The 'Pilos' helmet was a bronze copy of the felt helmet liner, and is usually portrayed as a bullet shaped cone often with a small 'waist' near the head. The rise of these more open helmets seems to have coincided with the increased use of missile armed troops – psiloi & peltasts. |

Negau? Doesnt have much of a brim but it is cone shaped. The helmet as worn by the Warrior of Capestrano has some brim though. looks like a comedy helmet. |

Might be a pilos with a slightly exaggerated lower bit. Not exactly like anything I've seen though. |

Looks more like a hat from Discworld

I believe it's a cone helmet, late 4th or 3rd century BC. There's a photo of a very similar bronxe one in my Warfare in Ancient Greece, Tim Everson, p137. Simon |
