After rebasing my 6mm Napoleonics 4 FREAKIN times, I have finally(thank GOD)decided on my ruleset. I based, and will keep, a huge 2" Grande Armee project. Several nations, minor powers, ect.. I then thought about using a tactical set of rules. So borrowing a few figs from above mentioned project, I built a very large army for Napoleonic Principles Of War(this took a loooong time). Not really satisfied with the "feel" of it(it did turn out quite nice), I decided to switch again. This time back to brigade based games(again). I was thinking about FPGA on a tiny scale. So, I had a bunch of 1" squares lying around. And, well I did it again. I rebased a LARGE French army on all blue bases for easy ID. I painted the back of the bases with a coded color matching the officer's base, so I could easily ID corps from Corps. Not happy with the artillery being "so large", I rebased all of it to a new sized base. Now happy, I planned on using cm instead of inches in FPGA. Trolling along the Yahoo group, I found Mark Severin's "pocket scale" GA. He, like me, is using cm on a 30mm base. DOH! My 25mm bases, don't work with cm on a reduced scale, and inches don't divide by 1/3rds well. So, I'm planning a rebase to 30mm right now. Then, I was looking at Le Grande Guerre, and I really liked the combat system(DBA like). I am probably going to try these in 30mm with cm for measurement. I will rightly miss having Corps commanders like Davout and Hill, but I will be able to build all the armies of the period in not time. I have already changed a few of the game mechanics to suit my taste. I just hope I don't get any more "brilliant" ideas. Hear me Sam Mustafa? Quit jacking with me =) Mike |

Just leave 'em based the same way. It usually all comes out in the wash. |

Milkshake, I also have a problem with the artillery bases, what size did you go for eventually? |

I've been trying to come up with a hybrid GA/FPGA/LGG system, but perfection eludes me. I'd be interested in hearing how you changed the game mechanics to suit your taste. |

I'd have left them on the 1" bases and used the centimeters anyway. What's 5mm among friends? Glad you liked the "pocket scale" idea too. Mark "Extra Crispy" Severin Owner, Scale Creep Miniatures scalecreep.com Check out the new rules directory at DeepFriedHappyMice.com |

"I'd have left them on the 1" bases and used the centimeters anyway." I'm a perfectionist freak. Although the more I look at it, the more I don't want to mess with it. Litko is well funded, thanks to my silliness. "I also have a problem with the artillery bases, what size did you go for eventually?"
I went with (on the 1" base) a 3/4 by 1". A little wider than the 1/2" x 1" it should have been. Things were pretty tight. Now my "gun" sits, manned by two crew(no more space). Don, this is just the beginning. I am only using vanilla LGG, with these changes: 1. Any unit rallied is permanently shaken for the remainder of the battle. Shaken units automatically fail attrition. Shaken units also ½ all combat results (after modifiers and before die roll), rounded down. Example: French Line rallies, and is marked Shaken. Several turns later they are attacked by cavalry. Before the die rolls, the French line has a total of 5 with normal modifiers. Because they are shaken, they round down to 2. The die rolls then proceed as normal. 2. After combat, even if pursued, all units that fail to rally become 1SP cadres. These cadres may be applied to increase other same type units (not above normal maximums). Example: The French army ends the day with 4 destroyed (failed to rally) infantry units, and 2 light cavalry units. He recovers 4 infantry SP's and 2 light cavalry SP's. The infantry sp's are line class, but may be applied to line or militia. If the infantry were Elite SP's, they may be applied to Elites, Line, or Militia (Yuk! What a waste!). The 2 light cavalry SP's may be used to recover any light cavalry unit, up to the maximum of three. If there is no room for these SP's, they are considered lost. 3. Units may never recover to maximum SP's. Infantry may not recover to 4, or cavalry to 3 during the battle. Overnight they may, by converging units or cadres. 4. Starting weather is determined by 1d6: 4-6 Normal/Sunny; 2-3 Overcast; 1 Precipitating Modifiers: Spring/Fall -1; Winter -2 After ½ of actions are complete roll 1d6: 1- weather worsens; 2-5 no change; 6- weather improves If the weather is Overcast (rained recently) or Precipitating, ground is soft. 5. Withdrawing from a combat requires a morale check, with no modifiers. If failed, unit suffers 1 SP. 6. Army break point revised. The number of units allowed lost, multiplied by this percentage. 45% Russia 40% France, England, Prussia after 1811 35% Prussia pre 1811, Austria, 30% Spain, Turkey Somehow, I would like to incorporate Wing commanders more
detailed. Corps commanders are out, as the scale is too big. "Ok Ney, here are your 3 units. Don't squander them." I would like to hear your thoughs on LGG/FPGA/GA

My 2 cents worth
After more than a Quarter Century at this caper I'm convinced there never has been, and never will be, "one true rules set" for Napoleonics. I'm not even convinced that, FOR ME, I will only ever want to play at one command level. I like both Brigade Level rules to re-fight the large battles and Battalion Level rules to capture the tactical detail and flavour. I'm looking at re-basing to a magnetic basing system that is modular and granular and lets me quickly and simply re-fit for different rules and different levels. Only my opinion, others mileage may vary. Nick |

Mike: my 1st plan was to use LGG but with brigades instead of divisions, and historical SPs a la GA. These days I'm hung up on trying to come up with a simpler but more "realistic" C&C procedure. Haven't worked on it lately. Been busy trading miniatures with various people. |

link You can check pics of this army out at the GA Yahoo photos. The album is under my old handle petterthegreat. I feel ya Nick. I thought of removable stands and magnetics. I have about 8 different 15mm tactical style rulesystems, enough to pull your hair out. I am happy Napoleonics are over for me finally, and I am choosing LGG. Don, I know, I read your AAR. I like the brigades too. But, I hate the SP system, LGG has a much easier(and fun)IMHO combat system. Basically, I am after FPGA, but with the combat system of LGG. However, I will be dumping my FPGA setup and going strictly LGG, with slight mods(see above). I figure LGG will be a compact, fun Napoleonics game with ability for Tournament or Campaign. Nor bad Sam, for 10 pages! I figure that with small bases 1" or 30mm, 6mm figures, and using cm for measurement, I will be able to build several armies quickly(economically too). So, from GA to FPGA, to LGG. With pitstops in between at Empire V, Battles for Empire, Shako, Napoleon's Battles, LFS, NPOW, and DBN. Whew, seriously feels good. Like a weight being lifted. Damn, I thought this hobby would be relaxing. TOY SOLDIERS FOREVER!!! me hungry now

My Napoleonic (and SYW, AWI and now ACW) figures are on 1 inch wide steel bases. When I want to use them for Grand Armee or Volley & Bayonet they go on 2 inch square magnetic bases that Wargames Accessories made for me. The one inch wide don't exactly match any rules out there but since both sides are mounted the same way, no problem. So I can do whole large battles or detailed small ones. |
